con rod bearings...ABS...misery!

Hello everyone

I have my friends 2000 1,4 petrol in my garage at the moment, and I'm getting quite desperate to be honest.
I'm getting ABS fault code 00283 (Mechanical Malfunction and Signal Outside Specifications - Intermittent). I've replaced the wheel speed sensor but to no avail. Next step is probably the loom. Could it be the ABS ring? I know it's integrated in the wheel bearing seal, but has anyone heard of it?
I connected a multimeter to the ABS main connector and the speed sensor connector and "played around" with the harness, but everything seems ok.

The worst part however is the engine knocking. I changed the oil (it was almost empty when he came in). I located the noice to the no1 cylinder and lifted off the cam housing and replaced 5 lifters that didn't seal properly, but the noice continues.
The knocking is load dependant i.e not existing when coasting, only when accelerating and idling. It sounds just like my 1972 BMW 2002 after I shot a big end con rod bearing accidentally revving it over 7000...
Suppose I did the lifters in vain also...
Is it possible to drop the oil pan without taking out the engine? Can anyone experienced let me know if this is the most probable cause for this horrible noice?
So far I have failed miserably. With my luck, the broken off tip of the oil dipstick will probably find its way up to and shear off the chain drive to the oil pump...:(

Regards to you all from an amateur mechanic with a severly damaged pride

Hi Redcreek, welcome to the A2oc
I don't think it tells you anything you don't already know but this is the RossTech fault code summary - http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00283
The integrated ABS rings don't seem to give problems but on rare occasions the whole bearing assy can creep out of the hub and cause loss of ABS signals
Its possible on the TDi so I'm sure the oil pan on petrol engines can be removed without taking the engine out. There should be recesses in the flywheel to allow socket access to some of the pan bolts. Turn the engine over to check this

Cheers Spike

It has been know for the front tyre to rub the ABS wire when on full lock. It is an easy fix with a soldering iron. To find the damaged wire it's best if you remove the front wheel.

Good luck

Thanks!

The wheel bearing seal ring looks just fine, so I bet my chances on the wiring loom (although this is a 16" version and the loom looks good).
The connector for the pad wear indicator is already broken so I've just ordered a "original" wiring loom from Audi...571SEK which is like 47£ or so...Pretty hefty for a piece of wiring I (probably) need to solder in place myself!
But to be honest, it's the engine knock that really worries me. The top end of these small machines has a bit of "Swiss clockwork" to them, and somewhat fiddly to work with. Luckily I speak German, so I bought the only repair manual I could find for a decent price (to my knowledge). It helped a lot!
Since the oil level was really low when my friend dropped the car, I assume something serious has happened with the bottom part, although he never got an oil pressure warning.
I don't mind the work, but I hate failing my repairs...
Dropping the pan and taking the big ends apart from beolw is, in my opinion, a pretty hefty job to do especially without knowing the exact cause. I was told that the crank bearings are non replaceable, but I doubt this is the reason why it sounds like an old Fordson Major with low oil pressure...
BTW, is it possible to lift the engine out the traditional way?
The opposite is probably beyond my work shop ability!

Regards to you all
Fredrik
