Convenience module

Recently purchased my A2 but it only has one key and the remote locking won't work. Central locking works fine from the key , no error codes showing when scanned with vcds. I've searched on here and found loads of useful information and tried reprogramming the remote both through the ignition and also using vcds. The remote has been tested by a car key centre company and works but they reckon it's an aftermarket remote . Using vcds it won't recognise the remote and they couldn't get it to program either. I'm awaiting a quote from the car key company to supply a complete new key/remote/transponder and also a replacement remote for the current key. My question is, in people's experience, is this likely to be an issue with the convenience module rather than the key? The code on the module in the car ends in AF. I asked the company if it was likely to be an issue with the module and they were quite emphatic that it must be the remote at fault.

Does the remote fob have an Audi part number? Split the key to read as if replacing battery, described in manual if you need it, a picture is good.

Can't see anything obvious on it . The only numbers are next to the battery

Key Fob part number needs to end with "D" to work with AF CCCU. Part number for the fob is on the outside of the case.

Thanks . The only number on it at all is the one that can be seen in the pic next to the battery. Doesn't have a "d" in it .

No you are looking inside the case. Snap the 2 halves back together. On the part that sides into the upper half with the key blade you will find small numbers including the part number on the opposite side to the 3 buttons.

Very poor image but you can make out the location of the numbers just below the join line where the upper key fits. Part number ends with 231D.

There's nothing stamped on it there . The company I took it to today did reckon it wasn't a genuine Audi fob

That could then be the source of the problem. Although the flip 3 button keys look the same across the Audi range you have to get the ones that operate on the A2 frequency.

Ok thanks . I'll see what this company come back with and then decide on my options.

Going to be expensive. May be better getting 2 used A2 complete fobs, getting 2 new ID48 chips and 2 blank key blades. There are companies out there that will supply a complete unit with a new blade cut to a photograph of your existing blade with new ID48. The keys would then need to be paired to the CCCU and ECU, again the supplying company me provide the complete service.

Something like this I presume I could swap with my existing one , retaining the current key and transponder chip. I have vcds so could program this one to work .

Not even sure if that is a genuine Audi key fob or just some generic three button one. If you have a genuine Audi key fob then the upper half with blade is reusable on a replacement lower remote half. Bit more complicated than just VCDS.

This thread explains very well what is required and if followed correctly does indeed work.

Thank you for the earlier pictures they have clarified the fob position, I think your auto electrician was correct this is some aftermarket key, does not work, put the bottom half in the bin.

Normally you can pick up a genuine used fob for the £20 mark on eBay, none around on eBay for a week or two and you are unfortunate the cheapest I can see, still a lot cheaper than the one you found. Is this

For a second key I would message the main eBay key sellers such as wigankeystore, and ask for a complete fob 8Z0837231D (virgin ID48 immobiliser chip, new battery and new aftermarket case if you prefer). Expect to pay around the £40 mark but you will still need to do the programming (pairing and immobiliser) and have a key cut, £10 by picture on eBay or maybe cheaper locally, e.g. Timpsons or auto electrical.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Andy. I'll await the reply from the local company that I spoke to yesterday and see what the cost will be for them to supply and program. Thinking if I get a new fob and key then I'll just keep the current one as a spare as it is still useable to unlock and drive the vehicle with. It's amazing how we all take for granted using a remote now that it feels a hardship to have to use a key to unlock the car ?

So the company has phoned back saying they want £210 to supply and program one key/remote/transponder. I can program the remote part myself and get the key cut its more the transponder that I couldn't do myself .

Try a mobile locksmith for their prices or just to set up the transponder chip(s). ALWAYS have more than one key, even if the second is a plastic valet key. If you lock your only key in the car it will be expensive as some members on here can testify to.

Ouch, that price is more Audi level, yes get other quotes.
