Coolant leak at coolant temp sensor... again.

Thank you.

I found a ‘genuine’ part on eBay for £3 delivered

Ridiculous if it is this that’s leaking!

I got the car back and had a chance today to try and localise the coolant leak. In the snow. Feels like -6!

I started out by making sure everything was dry (by letting the coolant level go low). Then went about sticking tissue paper all around the area of the coolant flange, above and below.

When you took the housing off - did you get a chance to look at the seat where the o-ring goes? If there is any wear, or damage, or muck, that could maybe lead to the seal not being properly formed when the sensor is clicked home with the clip?

Its a b****r of a job but I ended up taking the flange off again and fitting the sensor to ensure that the ‘o’ ring was centred properly. This was after I lost the ‘o’ ring inside the flange when I tried to ensure it was seated correctly!

It seems like Audi wants us to suffer in this particular area. I’ve fitted three thermostats and two temperature sensors and my TDi still struggles to warm up in cold weather. I’ve tried genuine and copy parts and still it doesn’t warm up like it is supposed to do. I’ve given up trying now!

Mine warms up fine. The thermostat replacement pain was a couple of years ago now. The G263 sensor remains the most physically painful work I’ve done on the car.

Removing this flange was just an access horror and cramped hands and back and turning bolts with a spanner by 1/16 of a turn per action then turning the spanner over for the next 1/16th. That was the worst!

When I had the flange off I cleaned it and scrubbed it and checked it all over. Kitchen sink and fairy liquid. The gasket seat section looked good. Really good for such an old part.

It’s weird. I’m going to try one more sensor and o ring replacement with a tiny amount of silicone rubber grease to lube it on placement. If that fails the car is going back to the garage (or maybe the junk yard... ).

Has it had a new flange housing on it?

no... I only realised that would be a good idea to replace it AFTER I had put it all back together!

For less than £10 I would definitely replace that if I was dismantling this bit of the engine again.

But I’m not going to. Ever again. Nope!

Some people have no staying power
It’s not easy to remove is it

I’m sure in summer it’d be a nicer proposition.

My fingers kept sticking to the metal bits whenever I took the gloves off to get into the fiddlier bits.

You are just lucky I didn’t appear at your door...

Which make thermostat and sensor have you fitted, out of interest? In case I’m ever foolhardy enough to give it another shot and finally sort out my slow warm up....

Fit a gates thermostats and you will be sorted
And an Audi sensor or you will have a leak

Febi. It felt like a much better fit than my old one.

I wonder if I might have damaged it though. I did fit the sensor in the housing then I had to remove it and put it back in. Maybe it didn’t like that...

I have fitted cheap thru to genuine but never had one leak. Currently got a Beru one with genuine seal from murrays direct it came with a seal that worked fine but i swapped it out of a passat after six months hence been fitted with a genuine seal

What a difference a sunny day makes to working on your car! It was almost pleasant today!

I replaced the seal on the coolant sensor no problem at all. Compared to my first time doing this is was a breeze! Removing the inter cooler air pipe helps so much with access and a little mirror on a stick as well.

The genuine Audi o ring and clip went in. The clip looked a little thicker than the old one - despite having the same markings. Strange.

Anyway... still dripping. From the same place. Gah!

I assume now that the drip is coming from the coolant sensor edge because it’s the lowest point for a leak above.

Time to consider ordering up a replacement flange and seal and strip down the whole lot again. Not excited by the prospect but a sunny day might make the difference to my enthusiasm.

Also noticed a new crack in my windscreen. Wasn’t there before the snow. About 10 inches starting at the bottom of the screen near where the wiper arm connect to the blade and curling up in a lovely curve. Blast!

I’m an idiot. New coolant flange and coolant sensor and seals ordered...

Why am I doing this to myself?

I hate to admit this, but I was almost holding my breath towards the end of this thread waiting for the 'DONE IT' comment....its like a mechanics version of Eastenders....will it, won't it, who did it......
I have my fingers crossed that you finally sort it, I will watch with baited breath for the next round of 'dripgate'.
