Coolant Level

I am having problems with the coolant level. it keeps dropping but not very much is needed to bring it back to just above min mark less than half a cup if that. going to get it checked out by VW garage just to make sure all is OK. The loss is over several weeks not just on one journey. I have to check it every 1000 miles or so

have a good look round the engine bay, it may just be a loose pipe, can you smell coolant if so there is a leak, you shouldn't be able to smell anything other than hot engine

I use VW antifreeze make it 50% water and 50% antifreeze. G012 is the product code. Not losing that much over a month so going to be hard for me to find so its booked in garage for next week. I hope its something expensive as I have a warranty so should be covered but knowing my luck it will be something thats not covered.

Just gone and checked the coolant level and all ok so what ever it is must be ever so slight. Getting a dab hand at removing the bonnet and putting it back can do it with my eyes shut now

Out of interest I have just checked the coolant level on my TDi - and it's about 5mm below the min mark. It was topped up 3,000 miles ago after I partially drained the system to replace a coolant temp sensor. There are no obvious leaks and no smell of antifreeze but one possibility is a weeping water pump seal. Not sure if its an A2 trait but it's not uncommon to have some leakage across the seal faces. An oil change is imminent so i'll see if its possible to view the water pump with the undertray removed.

Cheers Spike

Now that sounds feasable when I spoke to the Audi dealer yesterday they did say that the water pump on the A2 does sometimes give problems of that nature. It sounds like you have the same problem as me then as mine goes down by that much after around 2000 miles give or take. Find out next week and will post the findings
If its a water pump seal is it a new water pump job or just a replacement seal
Would be intresting to know if other A2 owners are getting this problem and did they find out the cause.

Hi crb
It will be a new pump. If they decide to change it in warranty and your anywhere near needing a new cambelt, it may be a good (cheap) time to have it done.

Cheers Spike

Only done 35k so new cambelt not yet due. Seems a bit too early to change it at 35k
I do have an all components warranty on my A2 so the water pump should be covered its an approved VW warranty from Mondial and have had work done on it before by the local VW garage

Water leak (and belts)

I too had a very slight coolant loss develop (1.4 petrol). @ 40k miles
Then a few months later the plastic guide on the cambelt tensioner-wheel fell apart (the one between the two cams) which required all the belts etc. to be replaced.

The independant VAG garage recommended changing the water pump at the same time, as it is belt-driven, & the rotor can fail prematurely, requiring major dismantling to get acess

Since the pump was replaced I've had no further leaks, so its likely that a seal or gasket was starting to wear.

I will get this checked on wed this week. No leaks noticed since i topped up on tues last week but that doesnt mean that there is not a leak as i think its a slow one most likely as mentioned the water pump seals

Well just got car back from VW dealership needed a new water pump so thats now replaced would have cost £203 but as I have an extended warranty its all covered phew. So far I have had £625 approx repairs carried out under the warranty I bought for £299 bargin

How and where did you buy the warranty? I'm thinking of buying it too but Audi is quoting me £510 for 1 year extended warranty... A bit expensive so a cheaper but equally reassuring policy would be great.

got my warranty from a company called mondial there are a few posts on here about this company. Think I was lucky to already have a warranty from VW which came with the car which I bought second hand from VW garage. When it ran out they offered me the chance to extend it from a company called mondial which turned out to be the best thing I ever did as it paid out over £900 on repairs. Sold my A2 now as I was getting fed up with it going wrong every few months got to the stage that I didnt trust it any more now got VW Polo Dune great car better ride and hopefuly more reliable time will tell. At least it has a 3 year warranty

Talking of warranties, when buying an 'approved used' from an Audi dealership it comes with a one year warranty. Is this backed up by Audi UK / the Audi dealership or outsourced to a company such as Mondial which the dealer initially pays direct? Grateful if someone could let me know the right answer. Thanks!

i bought my used A2 from audi and got a years warranty. The warranty gives you breakdown cover (rac) although you ring audi assist and parts and labour at any uk audi dealership.
