Coolant problem

Hi,

I'm sorry to say that I've been neglecting my A2 recently. I'm growing concerned about a problem i'm having with the coolant. I find myself topping up the water regularly. Also, when I open the water bottle after a run, the water is often bubbling with lots of steam. I fear this may be a head gasket problem? If so, how much would it cost to put right? I do hear pressure being lost elsewhere in the engine area, could this mean it's a cheaper fix?

I also believe that I have a hole in my exhaust gas recirculation pipe. Has anyone else had this problem? I know people in the past have had the mooing problem, but the sound I hear is more rattley and doesn't appear to be coming from the valve itself.

Thanks for any help

Holly

Hi Holly
Head gasket failures seem to be unheard of on the FSi so its more likely to be a radiator or possibly water pump seal problem. A tip - always have the water pump changed at the same time as the cambelt.
The cooling system runs under pressure so its normal for the water in the header tank to steam and bubble when the cap is removed (very carefully!!!) after the engine is up to temperature.
You probably already know this but its important to add antifreeze mix when topping up and not just plain water, especially in winter.
Short term it may be worth adding a radiator sealer as recommended to another club member with a similar problem - see link http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9194&highlight=bars+leaks

Thanks Spike, that's very reassuring. I did try Radweld last week, but the problem soon returned. A2 will go to the garage tomorrow. Hopefully the mysterious EGR problem will be solved at the same time :)
