Coolant Sensor

Just been to my local car spares shop for a new coolant sensor for the 1.6Fsi and was told that the sensor has a blue (not green) body with temperature parameters of 95-90 and 102-97. Is this acceptable? Thanks

I was going to say walk away now, but it would be better to run, and never think of buying parts there again. I am struggling with temperature range for a temperature sensor, it measures from below freezing up to 110+℃ with a FSI, it seems bizarre to me they quote a range.

First you had better be clear about which coolant temperature sensor you need, there are two with the FSI. One is the engine block outlet sensor that fits in the thermostat housing and the other is the radiator outlet sensor.

Whichever you require it would be wise to buy a genuine sensor from local Audi or TPS (if an option). Alternatively there is Crewe Audi on here, simply PM Tom with your car's registration and which sensor, it will cost more than aftermarket options but comes with peace of mind.

If they are quoting temp ranges I would take it to be the radiator sensor. But do not trust the information you have received. Still unsure why you have gone to a local car spares shop.

On 1.4 petrol the blue sensor suppose to be the bottom one, if I'm correct it's the same for 1.6 too. That's responsible to control the fan, when the engine reached certain high temperature. Mixing up happened before.
I bought 4 temp sensors,
all had different faults, didn't fit or temp issues, I also lost lot of coolant in the process
Then I decided to get one from Audi, cost nearly £60, but so far it's the best one. Bare in mind, the rubber ring still didn't fit, literally all of them came with wrong size rings, so I had to use the old one, which was in good shape fortunately.
I'm wandering too, why do you think you need new temp sensor.

After the engine management light came on I borrowed a plug-in diagnostic tool which told me that the fault code was P0118 and that 'Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High' was the cause. My first thought then was to change the sensor, but I have since been told by Andy that there is more than 1 sensor

As the description is Engine Coolant Sensor, I think, (not certain), that it'll be the one on the engine outlet, G62, before the radiator. The other is after the radiator, on the radiator outlet, G83.
If there's anyone on the scan register, not to far from you, can look at both sensor temperatures, and then you're sure which sensor it is.
See Group 130 below: (aks to @Andrew for the pic).

Good Afternoon,

If you Google 'ross-tech p0118' you will see the reference is to G62, in which case you need the green 4-pin sensor with part number 059919501A, the engine outlet sensor. Just remember buy cheap buy twice.

Yeah the g62 is a bit fiddly to get to, but doable. Bigger issue where you gonna get it from, as I'd mentioned it above it can be a headache if you try to save money.

Wow, I'm truly overwhelmed by the responses received regarding this. I'm really grateful and ever so slightly surprised that so many people are willing to share their knowledge and experience and give up their time to help others less competent, I've already learned a lot and am looking forward to my A2 journey. I have contacted my local (Wakefield) dealer who will order the part I need when I decide what that is, and as the car isn't in use at the moment I haven't had chance to look under the bonnet today but hopefully will get in there tomorrow.

Took the car into IVC in Leeds and they changed the sensor, seems good at the moment. Thanks for all your advice
