Copying a Votex Boot spoiler

I've decided after searching high and low for a genuine one for my white Tdi that my only real option was to make one myself. I looked at various different spoilers to see if any could've been adapted Believe it or not a Toyota Prius is very similar in shape but after purchasing one it ended up being too much work trying to make it work, it was easier just to start with a blank sheet of high density plastic and a thicker piece for the end caps.

In all honesty I didn't hold out much hope of it working but thought hey what have I got to lose, a few quid on materials and a bit (quite a big bit) of my time so decided to give it a go.

It's still got a way to go before it's ready to paint but it's not a million miles off and I've actually surprised myself how well it's turning out

Oh and before anyone asks I've no intentions of putting them into production unless you want to pay me enough to retire I'm having trouble finding the time to do my own one

Interesting... How much does it weight? How you gonna attach it to the rear window? Also the oem spoiler held by strong glue, how you gonna remove it without risking breaking it?

If this works great all together, as you got the sample either way, perhaps you'd even sell a few? I'm sure some of us would be interested.

Also I've noticed the silver A2 on the background got votex, would like one on my mine too :)

When you fit a oem Votex spoiler you don't actually remove the original one, it's just a shell that bonds on top of it so the fitting is fairly straightforward.

As for producing them it's not going to cost that much in materials but way too labour intensive to even consider making them to sell I'm afraid πŸ™„

Hats off to you! Very good work and fully appreciate the time invested to get this done. You could make it better than the original in shape or size AS YOU WISH. You could also make an extra drainage holes or slots even build in a rear view camera.

This would also be an ideal candidate to vinyl wrap to whatever colour(s).

Thanks mate 😊 I was too busy trying to make an exact replica but if I ever decide to have another go at it I might try something a bit different but that's a big if πŸ˜‚ Although I will need one for the pine green so you never know

Ian, very well done. My progress is slower than yours, as plenty of time but facilities and priorities are hindrances.
Smurf is an FSI so am fabricating a bit larger spoiler to suit that. Will add images when I finally get there!

Amazing bit of work!

Having watched this progress on a well-known social media platform, I remain in awe of the work. It really is taking shape and is proof that ’if there is a will, there is a way’. Well done again Ian.

Progress made so far, I few pin holes to fill then sand down with some 400 wet n dry and it should be into primer by tomorrow evening all going well

Morning Iain,

Wow, this is working out just fine isn’t it. Really excited to see the finished item fitted. Such an inspirational project which I’m sure many will follow and replicate.

I’m also quite interested in having a go at this myself on Project RN53.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom, Yes it's working way better than I first thought it would, I'm desperate to see it done too but don't want to rush it and end up making a pigs ear of it πŸ™„

I was luckily enough to have a genuine one to copy to give exact sizes and angles etc, I reckon doing it without one would be even more of a challenge πŸ€”

Well today went well, I got it into primer and a guide coat applied.

As always there was a couple of pin holes appeared that'll need addressing but looking so much better now it's all one colour and starting to look like something.
