Creaking Stearing!

Hi All,
Just have a question & im hoping you guy's can assist. I have a 2000 Year A2 & in the last few days a creaking sound has started when the steering wheel is turned. Ive checked the power steering fluid and its fine. The steering is working normally and otherwise alls fine. Could anyone offer a possible cause? Regards

Is the creaking coming from in the cabin or in the engine bay? Some owners have had screws loose (literally, not figuratively) which may be a possible cause. Otherwise, it may be related to suspension.

Cheers,

Mike

The sound seem's to be coming from the drivers side. It only happens when turning corners to the right.
Maybe a screw!:)

But is it a creaking within the cabin on the drivers side, or outside, in the engine bay area?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi again! The sound sound like its from within the cabin, somewhere on the drivers side inside the dashboard,(in the far right hand side of the car) . Spoke a the garage I bought the car from (Toyata dealer) & he says it like the VW's he see's,and it probably a spring ontop of the shock absorber-over 340 Euros + Labour to fix!!

Hi there,

i had same problem in my car. A new strut bearing and mount sorted the problem. I also had a new shock absorber fitted . All cost £165.

I also have such a (light) noise when turning the steering wheel, but it's from inside the cabin and, I think, caused by the steering wheel rubbing against some platic trim.
Is it a case of loose screws ?
Or spraying some silicone lubricant will cure that noise ?

Hi, I had this exact problem for nearly a year until at MOT time my car failed due to several key bolts missing from the steering rack!! Essentially every time I turned the wheel, the whole steering rack was moving! Anyway, easy enough to fix and the bolts cost pence.

The creaking on mine sounded as if it was coming from the passenger footwell/ suspension if that helps....

Some VWs and Audis do have problems with the "Top strut mounts" wearing which makes a creaking noise like you describe. My Audi S2 quattro used to do that - the strut mounts were the same part as off the 1980s era VW polo - a car that weighed 1/2 as much, had 5times less power, but VAG used the same load-bearing component in the suspension to save cost. Nice!
