Cruise control new version

Hi, I fitted Cruise on my car about a year ago and it stopped working , I suspect it's the cheap stalk I bought , would anyone know the part number for the newer stalk with the rocker switch , may as well fit that one while it's in bits :)
Thank you

cum cartec version here €65 plus shipping...

no actual part number though.
Thank you for that , was hoping just for the stalk on its own I already have the kit wired in

Off Ebay you may (will almost certainly) find that it is a non-original stalk. I bought one of these but then realised that buying parts is very different to installing them and got @timmus to do his magic including supply of an OEM stalk while fitting colour DIS 20 months ago. The plastic part of the stalks all look and feel identical. However, when you turn it round, on the reverse where the wiring from the stalk-end buttons emerges with the connector, on the OEM one, the wires are quite chunky and wrapped in proper loom tape. The Ebay one had a thin ribbon connector that on mine was already kinked badly where it flexes with stalk movement and I would be concerned that this is a weak point where the insulation or a connector could crack or fail. I've still got it on a shelf in my garage, and very happy with the real one fitted. As is often said, buy cheap, buy twice.

The bigger issue with non-OEM or non-Timmus is that the various available models of supplementary loom that you need to connect from steering column to the electronics under the floor are all a foot too short for an A2 (being both for LHD and intended for things like VW transporter or one of the contemporary VW Golf or Passat models) - so you have to think about bodging an extension - again not ideal for something safety-critical. The German place linked above is at least the right length as far as I understand, but more expensive and with Brexit, maybe difficult to get hold of.

I don't want to pee on your bonfire, but thought it would be useful to give a balanced perspective - best of luck with the upgrade!

actually robin your right i should of learnt first time with the one thats broken now, i just had a look at some used ones on ebay and see exactly what you mean by the ribbon, the originals are much thicker, probably even better to buy a used original one, thank you for pointing this out

I must apologise for not reading your first post completely - I was in a hurry this morning - but perhaps for your Ebay search if you can find a used original that hasn't quite gone the moon and back and is still reliable it may well be a workable solution to your current issue. A lot of original VAG parts back then seem to have been built to last, so with a bit of luck you may get what you need. Fingers crossed!

The only way to buy reliable electronic components such as a cruise stalk, is to get them new from TPS or a dealership parts department.

Yes, they're expensive, but they have a 2 year warranty and they work. My original cruise stalk still works reliably after 16 years of almost daily use, so in a cost per use comparison, it's more than worth it.

And to clarify on stalk design, the press button end and rocker end, there's not one design that's newer or older. They are the result of the VAG ergonomics obsession, so cars which have a rocker button stalk on the wiper side (such as an A2 with DIS) will get a press button cruise stalk, to avoid muscle confusion between sides. From memory, the rocker version is a VW part (1J0 I think) and the press switch version is an Audi part (8L0, again, from memory). It's not being boastful to say that I pioneered the retrofitting of cruise to our A2s, the wiring loom required, cable routing and so on. The proper part to use is the 8L0 stalk - that's what the designers from Audi had in mind, but the 1J0 can be used with the same wiring and plug, so it's user preference. However, get an original part - they're all I ever used to supply, as I knew the owner would have no trouble with it.

The other thing to mention is that if your cruise works intermittently then it could also be an issue with the brake switch or the clutch switch, both of which are prone to failure but will only really be evident on a VCDS scan.

Well finally got round to removing the stalk , there is the problem , don't buy cheap parts lol
