Dashboard Christmas Tree

Hi all,
This has happened to me a few times since owning the car, so I thought I'd ask. When I go on a motorway or any road that I need that sort of speed for, obviously, more revs are needed to get up to speed. So, when I reach about 4500 revs, my dashboard always lights up like a Christmas tree, I believe this has happened 4 times now, and to me it just screams a sensor issue rather than an actual fault. The car drives as normal after this happens. Opinions on what the problem may be please?
Thanks,

Adam

I should probably add as well, the lights all go off except from the engine management light, upon restarting the engine. The engine light goes off after a few miles of driving.

1.4 petrol?

Yes it is, should've specified, sorry.

I’ve had this on 2 cars both 1.4 petrols.

So in my experience this gets worse, it starts like this then changes into the car cutting out at the same time.

On the cars I’ve had this on I believe it’s caused by multiple issues. The following fixed each car.

Car 1
Front Lambda and Crank pos sensor

Car 2
I change the above but didn’t fix it, then it turned out to be the throttle body of all things!

The car was cutting out before I replaced the map sensor and cleaned the throttle body, it hasn't cut out since, but the crank position sensor is a good shout,I hadn't thought about that.

Could be but from my experience it’s the ecu just giving up when there are multiple issues or something very out of range.

This used to happen to me all the time in mine . Cured it by buying a Genuine new Earth strap for behind the headlight from Audi Crewe. If you strip the rubber sheath back off the cable it will probably be corroded you wont see it unless you strip the cable back.

How much was this from Crewe Audi please? I've fixed the bolt but not the cable itself.

You could try and connect a jump lead cable between the block and chassis securing it well so that it does not come off while testing / driving. If everything OK after this test then its the earth lead. You could even run about for a short period while the correct lead arrives with the jump lead fitted.

This might help some. Put the vagcom in the car and next time this comes on, stop when you can and check what it says.

My jump leads are older than me, I don't think I'll be able to secure them well enough to be honest.

I never had a problem with mine starting. I just had Christmas lights all the time. Here are a few pictures of the cable on mine. IMAG0124.jpgIMAG0122.jpgIMAG0126.jpg

Lots of earth straps on eBay (search 'engine earth strap') for a quarter of the Audi price, although you who have to know the length and ring hole sizes and possibly conductor size. Always a question of unkown quality (I always check the seller's trade volume), but might be be worth a punt as a repair/test/additional test wire.
