Diesel tank size

So what size is my tank ? Handbook says approx 42 litres, I've filled up twice and only got 36+ litres in and that I thought was doing a fairly deep run in to the red . Ive read on hear some are 34 L , I have the 90 hp diesel if that makes a difference ?

You have the 42 litre tank
I have the 34 litre tank and about 18 months ago I wanted to run some diesel purge through the fuel system
To do so I wanted the minimum amount of fuel in the tank such that the purge was as concentrated as possible
I had a 5litre can in the boot so ran to the fuel warning light zeroed the trip then did a further 50 miles which took the needle to empty then a further 40 miles now the gauge was on the wrong side of empty
Car never missed a beat going round corners nor up and down hills
I thought this was near enough so put in my litre of purge and went for a 15 mile drive then to the fuel station to fill up. To my absolute surprise I only got 31 litres in the tank
So I still had 3 litres in the tank
I now regularly run to 50 miles after the fuel light comes on and tend to get 29 litres into the tank without burping it That gets a further litre or so
I’m normally around the 420 to 440 miles but this depends on type of running and weather conditions. I think the webasto is using as much as the engine ATM as my run to work is only 8 miles

I refuel asap once fuel light comes on due to remaining diesel circulating system getting hotter and hotter!

According to Diesel specialists your lubricated fuel parts, injectors, pumps ect are placed at great risk of accelerated wear!

Good point, I'm always worked on the theory (based on driving alfas) not to drain the tank through fear of sucking up crap at the bottom of the tank

When I had the tank sender unit out with nearly an empty tank it was immaculate in the tank nothing in terms of muck etc
Hence my maxing out the 34litres well 30 of them

I ran my 90 down to 20 miles range in DIS the other night then filled up and got 41.7 litres in it before the filler nozzle tripped so I think on mine there is next to no “reserve reserve”.

This may help:

I went 100mile after the DIS showed 0 and then fitted 45ltrs in afterwords.

Hi,

I can see you guys want to get the most miles out of your tanks of diesel and feel somewhat aggrieved when there is still fuel in the tank however diesel engines are not like petrol. If you run out if diesel you have to bleed the system to get any air bubbles out (fine if you have the mechanical know how and time) whereas in petrol engines you can just fill up, turn it over A few times and it should be okay.

My personal view is look at the bigger picture, you probably shouldn't worry about that last 20 odd miles as it’s probably saved you time and money getting your car fixed and some untold damage which are exasperated on older cars like ours. This is also the reason manufacturers build in a margin of safety (it probably helps reduce warranty claims too).

Separate but related note, I wouldn't even consider running out of fuel on my FSI since it’s direct injection, I’m running it with mechanical sympathy in mind. The only A2 then that I’d happy run out of is the 1.4 petrol but really what’s the point? Just calculate what you had left in the tank and multiply by your current mpg, then add to the miles that you’ve done for a theoretical maximum.

I’m also one for hyper miling But not at the expense of other mechanical costs. Just my opinion so please don’t shoot me down.

I had mine down to 0 before and it’s 35-37 to fill up again.

I was surprised to get more than 32 litres into my 75ps when I filled it. On a 52-reg what size tank do I have?

I paid £50 at a services with the cost being around £1.40/L so about 35 litres. The fuel light had only just pinged as I drove from the service station car park up to the forecourt.

Certainly a 42 litre tank if you got 35 litres in from the low fuel light just coming on

I have a TDi75 with the smaller tank. I routinely fill up a fair bit after the bong and NEVER get more than 30L in.

I drove an extra 23miles after the DIS said ‘0miles’ range last week and got 29.9L in. It was accidental due to a fuel station being unexpectedly shut and the next nearest being 23miles away and was a tense journey! How you guys can drive 50miles on zero range I have NO IDEA!

I once had to drain the tank at the roadside via the fuel filter drain screw after a misfuel and that’s the only time I’ve managed to get over 30L in.
