Different 1.4 TDI models

Hello All,

Was wondering about different A2 1.4TDI models, from what i can see there is the TDI 75 and TDI 90, however TDI75 seems to have 2 variants? One with road tax at 150£ (which i have), presumably earlier model and one with 30£ road tax, is there any actual difference between the two? Are all TDI 90 models with the slated grill? TDI90 seems to have been only made for about a year, late 2013 to late 2014/early 2015? https://www.parkers.co.uk/audi/a2/hatchback-2000/car-tax/

Also is there any simple/easy way to differentiate the 75bhp and 90bhp TDIs? Thinking of fixing mine up fully and having some fun, but long term would like to keep an eye out for a nice spec 90 bhp TDI when opportunity arises and either sell my current A2 or pass it on to friend/relative (someone who i know wont crash it!)

I've also seen some have leather interior but most A2 models i've seen have standard fabric seats/trim, was this a factory option? Replacement leather seats seem to cost 1/2 of the car so hardly seem worth it and though i've seen some for late with leather interior these seem to be rarer than unicorns. Wiki seems to have limited details too on the specs. Is there a breakdown of the specific models and options available? Sport or SE seem to be most attractive, love the little cars and would like to have the more nicer trim level ones as a forever car to add on mods and improvements as well as more modern features.

We will be selling a 5 seater leather/alcantara interior soon, but it will not fit a 4 seater if that's what yours is?

There was a slight revision to the TDI75, in 2003/4 I believe, the engine code changed from AMF to BHC, but it still had the same outputs. The TDI75 is exactly the same engine throughout 2001 though, it's just the taxation rules for it that changed, effective March 1st. So, should you ever find one, don't buy a TDI on an X-plate if you want cheap tax. (If you're in London, you'll get clobbered for the ULEZ charge with any TDI in any case, it's only the petrol models that are deemed acceptable.)

The only external differentiator between a '75 and a '90 is that the 'I' on the TDI badge is painted in red on a '90, if it's still got any paint. The engine code for a '90 is ATL.

There were three models for most of the production run: base, SE and Sport. Base cars had a plastic steering wheel and no aircon, foglights or false floor, and came on 15" chrome-effect alloy wheels. The SE added these items as standard plus a leather steering wheel and the familiar 16" six-spoke alloys. The Sport got a different (3-spoke leather) steering wheel and gear lever, the large-bolster seats, and 17" wheels on slightly lowered and harder suspension, but although it got the DIS display it did away with the foglights and false floor again. I'm not sure exactly which of these items could then be ordered to upgrade a car on which they weren't standard, but there was a large list of options including leather seats, CD changers, BOSE, OSS, cruise control and more. Someone did post the options list once, you might be able to find it.

In 2003/4 there was an option of 'Colour Storm' which gave brightly coloured paintwork with the roof, wheel arches and rubbing strips in matt black, teamed with a colour-coded interior. This could be ordered for a base or SE car - I don't think it was ever sold with a Sport model though.

Late in the production run the three models were reduced to one, the 'Special Edition' which is essentially a base car with climate control.

The above is all my understanding: anyone who has better information please feel free to correct me.

Earlier 75s had the AMF engine which was Euro 3. Later 75s had the BHC engine which was Euro 4. Just about the only difference is that the BHC engine had coolant cooled EGR. The change from AMF to BHC was in 2003, I believe. 90s first appeared in 2003 with coolant cooled EGR and (unlike the BHC) had a VNT turbo. They are Euro 4.

The reason that you are paying £150 VED is presumably because you car was first registered before 1st April 2001? Otherwise you would pay £30.

Basically the difference in trim levels and features depended on what extras the original buyer specified when ordering from new. A good understanding of what was base v extras across the variants can gained by looking at the original price lists in the subforum Knowledge>Brochures.

While I think about it, the slatted grille is just a minor facelift applied to all models in 2004 I think. The wiper arm also changed at some point before then to take an aero wiper blade instead of a frame one.

Mine is a 4 seater, shame as would be quite interested to upgrade.

Thanks everyone this is an awesome amount of information regarding these TDIs gives a lot more insight in what to look for when i'll be out looking for another!

The VED difference is based on registration date. After 2001 (y plate, could be 51??) VED would be based on co2, before that engine size. Oops, just spotted Rab said exactly this... I'll get me coat.

The actual date was 1st March 2001. 1st April would have been more appropriate though! Due to VW's late delivery, my Lupo 3L qualified for free VED when that came in in 2006(?). My wife's 1999 Lupo 3L also qualified for free VED because it was registered in the UK after the above date. Had it been registered in the after UK after a certain date in 2012 it would not have qualified; the legislation was changed from "registered in the UK" to "first registered anywhere". Had it not been for VW's late delivery, we would have had a 2001 Lupo 3L without free VED and a 1999 Lupo 3L with! What should have happened should have been based on what is in the CoC, not on the year of registration! VW were early adopters of placing emission values in their CoC's, at least two years ahead of requirement.

Even now, if you apply for a card to drive in French cities, the scheme is based on year of construction, not on the emission values of the car. So a 1999 Lupo 3L, which meets Euro4, according to the French, is Euro3. Idiots!

The Audi A2 1.4 TDI with 55 kW (75 bhp) engine will soon have a big brother: starting in November 2003, an uprated version of the A2 with a 66 kW (90 bhp) engine will join the programme, enlarging it to five engine versions in all. With a maximum torque of 230 Nm between 1900 and 2200 rpm, this compact three-cylinder unit accelerates the A2, a true 'light athlete' with an aluminium body, in 10.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. This new top version in the Audi A2 model line has a top speed of 188 km/h and complies with the tough European EU4 exhaust emission limits. The customer benefits in two ways: there is a tax concession until 2005, and in any case the car's fuel consumption is gratifyingly low, with a total test figure of only 4.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. The new engine owes its higher power output and torque primarily to a new turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and a boost pressure raised to 2.3 bar (absolute). The new charge-air intercooler, with a distinctly higher efficiency rating, also contributes to the 1.4-litre engine's higher performance, as does the optimised combustion chamber pattern. The compression ratio has been lowered to 18.0 : 1. Further detailed work on the engine and its high-pressure fuel injection system has enabled Audi's engineers to comply with the most stringent emission limits currently valid worldwide. Examples of their work are the electrically operated exhaust gas recirculation system, which now has an uprated cooling capacity and the shutoff flap in the intake manifold, controlled by the engine operating map, which helps to maintain the optimum combustion mixture. The pump-injector elements have a modified spray angle and increased flow capacity to suit the new operating situation. There have been detail modifications to the entire pump-injector system. The new Bosch EDC 15 engine management with EOBD (European On-board Diagnosis) and separate pilot injection has injector elements of even higher precision and therefore exerts a positive effect on emission and noise levels. The larger oil cooler and the new pistons with cooling oilway are a logical consequence of the more extreme temperatures likely to be encountered in this powerful engine. Screening measures on the intake manifold and cylinder block have achieved a distinct improvement in the three-cylinder engine's acoustic refinement.

That's interesting from Audi. I have 5no TDI90's and none of them have an "electrically operated exhaust gas recirculation system". Electrically operated shut off flap (ASV), yes, but the EGR is vacuum operated.

You have 5 tdi 90s!!! Wow

Originally you had the standard model and SE, the latter added climate, illuminated vanity mirror, leather wheel, front fogs, false floor, load cover, 6-spoke alloys and cost £1950 more.

The 2003 model year (August 2002 deliveries) made the biggest change to spec, the SE model, which was now only £500 more, lost climate control but added the Concert II stereo, the standard car also got a load cover. In addition the Sport specification was introduced, it didn’t have any of the SE spec, over the standard model it got 17” alloy wheels, sports suspension, jacquard cloth trim with front sports seats (and electric lumbar adjustment), 3-spoke leather wheel and gear lever, full DIS. All models had the option of climate and metallic for £250 as a promotion for much of the 2003 and 2004 model year which is why most had this fitted. Also, 1.6FSi introduced.

2004 model year (August 2003) introduced the TDi 90 engine, fluted grill and 3-point centre rear seatbelt on cars with the bench, replacing the cheese wire lap belt. The Sport also now had Matrix upholstery instead of Jacquard.

2005 model year is Soecial Edition, which is the base 75bhp models with the Concert II cd player and climate control.

As has been noted, tax rates for diesels relates to when the car was registered.

Nice to see you back on the forum, ULP.
