Digital clutch

Hello!

It seems that my A2 has taken a step closer into the digital era of ones and zeros, on or off. ;) Far away from the progressive clutch travel from my earlier Audi A6 1.8T.

The pedal movement from not engaged to engaged is very short resulting in higher revs than needed and probably higher clutch wear. Every start from stand-still requires concentration. A real pain in the a__.

Does anyone experience the same thing? Any suggestions on what might be the cause? The clutch does not skid at all so I have ruled out a worn-out clutch.

Thanks!

Hi Patrik
The clutch on my 2001 TDi is very progressive and it is always easy to feel the point of engagement. Many years ago I drove a 1.4 petrol car and had problems pulling away smoothly from rest. From memory I think this was more related to significant lag in throttle pedal response rather than the clutch action.
On a previous car with a non progressive clutch action the problem turned out to be lack of lubrication and rusty splines on the gearbox mainshaft. This stopped the clutch plate sliding smoothly when pressing the pedal.
Hopefully club members with petrol A2's will provide some feedback on the clutch action of their cars.

Hi Spike!

Thanks for your reflections on this issue. I got a PM from a fellow A2 owner experiencing the same problem since his car was new (2001). He says his Audi stealer claims the clutch is just fine! Could this be a textbook example of state of denial? ;)

Regarding the lack of lubrification and rusty splines on the petrol A2 you drove years ago: what action was taken?

The point of engagement is very crisp. The problem is from this point on. I just need to move my foot 1 inch or so until full engagement.

Any one else driving a petrol A2 experiencing this problem? Is the lag in throttle response typical for the petrol version?

Hi Patrik
The 'previous car' I referred to was not an A2. It was an Audi 80 - and I removed the gearbox to change the clutch and release bearing but found the rusty splines.
Also check out threeD's posts on a clutch problem which sounded like the clutch plate was so worn that the release mechanism would go 'over centre' and lock. Aparently there was no clutch slip to indicate the friction plate had worn out
