Hi all,

When trying to increase fan speed there is a delay and then it increases for a few seconds before going back down to zero as it were.
The fan makes like a clicking sound when I try to increase speed but does not seem to engage.
I feel the car does get warm but no fan at all.

If anyone has experience with this issue please help or advise.

Remove the glovebox. Take your blower motor out and fully clean the "hamsters wheel" is should be white in colour. Then spray the bearings with WD40 and spin the wheel many times to get the oil into the bearings. I used my electric drill for this. The cage should rotate quite freely now, so if you give it a spin by hand it will take about 5 seconds to stop. Clean the excess WD40 off, refit the motor back into the housing making sure the 3 locating rubber wedges fully locate their lug over the slot, use a small flat screwdriver to make sure fully in. Refit the unit back into the car. Note there is one awkward screw that secures the housings together , to access this screw there is a convenient hole in the dash support.

Not saying you need it all but a good reference source so useful to bookmark it for the future. You will find other guides on here to remove the glovebox but this is a very good starting point.

Beware, WD40 is not really a lubricant. It's a moisture dispersant.. It'll provide short term lubrication, until it drys out. Lithium or graphite grease is a better bet for metal (bronze) bearings, silicone for nylon bearings. Available in aerosols, with thin tube. Clean the bearing first, then lubricate.
Squirt a drop of WD40 onto glass, leave to dry, and look at/fell the result.
I'm a fan of WD40, not anti, just that it's not right for everything, imo.

Some bearings are designed not to be lubricated, so flushing out the "rust" and debris with WD40 and leaving it at that can be the better option. The added grease can also attract more dust and debris to not just the bearings but the whole area as it is flung out when the fan rotates. Damp pollen filters are the worst and usually how the bearings "rust"
 
Holy shmoley, the two screws at the top are mad. Any tools you can recommend that’ll make it easier to get to them?

It is normally just the one at the very top.
There is a special hole in the aluminium structure that is designed so that you can get a driver onto the top bolt.
If you have a strong but slim flexy and get it through the special hole then it should be ok. But I just persevered with turning it a fraction of a turn each time. Needless to say that one bolt is best left out (when you have removed it)

Many A2s that I have worked on have that bolt missing, from a previous owner having “fun” getting it out.
But with the right tools it can be easy.

All the tools I have are not working for that top screw. What did you guys and girls use for that?

If I remember correctly I used a 3/8 ratchet with a 6" extension and a bit holder and bit in the end. To do the PITA bolt, I held the bit and holder on the inside of the hole through the dash bar, then fitted the extension and then the ratchet to them, no universal or flexy shaft used. But you may find a different combination suits you better.,

Oh and I put a dab of vaseline on the bit to retain the screw. Or blutac or whatever you prefer.
 
So after a few hours I’ve taken out the screw.
Now how do I disconnect the connecter in the blower fan housing?

You have to undo or break the 2 cable ties that secure the loom that runs over the housing. On the plug for the blower there is a release tag may even be two of them you have to push in while pushing the whole plug towards the blower. I think the release tag is on the shorter ends of the plug but not sure. Best to take a couple of pictures of the plug with your phone so you may be able to see where the lock is that you need to press in to release the plug. Picture from the manual but plug release not shown on that.... typical
