DJ's adventures in A2 land

Certainly wants a cover on the aero wiper arm
Are the bushes and pins worn. If so a refurbished arm would be a better long term solution but if the pins/ bushes are good then a cover will help keep it that way and also make it look much tidier

All appears to be good and tight with no unwanted lateral movement in the joints Paul, so just a cover needed please.

I had an hour’s tinkering just now. I knew there was a good reason for hoarding a second set of genuine Audi rubber mats!

The Only issue is I only have one rear, not two -but I had a solution, again luckily I hoarded a swing grey rear space system storage box!

Then came the ceremonial replacement of the missing rear cupholder - thank goodness it’s a perfect match with what’s there!

I also had a spare oil top up bag so this was installed - it’ll be used to carry Millers and / or two stroke oil:

David,

Looking fantastic. It’s going to be a hard decision you’re up again in a few months.

I might have a spare factory rubber mat that I’d happily donate to the cause Sir.

Over the weekend, whilst I’m searching for some Space Floor Box parts I will locate the spare mats and send you some pictures. I know there’s in very good condition as they rarely get any foot action.

Kind regards,

Tom

David,

Pictures slightly earlier than promised. Easy to get to in the garage.

Nice and clean:

Just as clean on the bottom:

Part number for clarification:

Weighed it on the kitchen scales and it is just under 2kg. Should be able to wrap it up and get it on its way this weekend if you’re interested Sir. Hermes is £4.40 for 1-2kg.

Obviously the Space Floor Box hides that fact you’re missing one but still might be useful to you in the future.

Kind regards,

Tom

Wow - well I wasn't expecting that - Thank you Tom very much! I'll ping over a nice round fiver to you now for your trouble.

Additional items I need to attend to: @Clackers / @A2Steve / @Ami would one of you have a boot sill finishing strip in nice condition? Mine is one of the few parts of the car that really do show it's imminent entry into the 200k club:

1631887163485.jpeg

Additionally I noticed the boot struts are original and not surprisingly are weak, so I'll order a set of Stabilus replacements now as I'm so pleased with the OE-style "soft open" of those on Audrey.

Other items I noticed on the drive to my new place - Akoya is a little slower to warm up than Audrey and the needle sits slightly below 90 degrees for a while before finally ticking up to 90 - as opposed to moving there slowly but surely when Audrey warms up and then staying there. I see a 'stat change on my horizon, good thing I've got a new genuine one in my stash!

Finally, this wing was on the back seat - paint is scratched so it would need painting - would it be of use to anyone?

Have got an excellent one here pal, will upload pics when I get home.
Andy

Look forward to fitting that Andy.

Today I filled up Akoya and found another way in which this car is the same as Audrey: DIS said an average of 53mpg has been achieved since the last full, whereas calculated actual (filled until the tank was about to overflow after using the burp button) was roughly 15% over this at 60mpg - which for a mixture of half and half long steady motorway cruise at 65-68mph and then lots of short runs in the hills round here, is remarkable I think.

I started my now-regular fuel cleaning regime for a new car to me - a double dose of Millers additive in every tankful for a few thousand miles - ultimately I will do a diesel purge however, as I’m hoping this will cure the engine vibration I’m getting at cold idle (I need to also check glow plug operation as it only does it at cold mind).

Mileage-wise, I think I should be in the 200k thread by spring:

Also the new Stabilus boot struts arrived today so they need to go on.

Also does anyone have a drivers door card in swing grey? I assume it needs to be a 4x leccy windows one? (EDIT: no it does not, thanks @Proghound) - Here’s why I’m asking:

Before I press the "buy it now" button I would appreciate your thoughts on the Stabilus struts please David. ?

Audrey wears a set and they’re just the job Dave, no reason these will be any different - they start working and open the tailgate with fairly minimal effort needed in terms of lifting - with a nice damped action at the end of their travel.

David, it doesn't have to be 4x leccy windows, but if it's 2x, then as well as the switch panel from your armrest, you will have to swap the wiring loom over from the back of your current doorcard. Neither is a difficult task if you've got the doorcard off anyway. You will have to cut one fastener on the loom at the bottom of the doorcard which is like a cable-tie, but you can put another cable-tie around it.

Look forward to fitting that Andy.

Afternoon David,

I have a set of Swing Grey Door Cards here. Available FOC. If you want just the drivers then I could probably ship that’s own to you.

Kind regards,

Tom

Tom that is super-kind of you. Thanks very much.

A quick update on Akoya’s rough idle- after filling the tank and adding a double-dose of Millers previously then having driven a grand total of 10 miles, I started the car this morning to find that the issue has completely disappeared! Coincidence? I’m pretty sure the Millers wouldn’t have started working that quickly!

I’m really getting attached to this little car. Once the seats are swapped over when I get Audrey back it’s going to be hard to say goodbye, it really does drive like an example with under half the mileage on it in every respect, plus once I’ve cleaned up the interior and replaced the few worn items of trim it’s going to feel really smart.

Yesterday it was time to get Audrey acquainted with the workshop at the new house for a 6000 miles oil change and to finally sort the leaking alloy boost pipe. Looking at the mileage the car has done around 11-12k miles since I acquired it, so I was keen to have a good look around to check all is well.
1633243901671.jpeg

I soon had the under tray off while the oil was draining and had a good look around with no other issues noted. By the way, I’m very relieved to report there was a total absence of swarf on the magnetic sump plug this time, confirming the hypothesis that the hedgehog of filings stuck to it last time must have been legacy from over the car’s life that finally got picked out when I installed it). I whipped out the air filter for a genuine one (the screws were VERY stiff, they got well lubricated via a dunking in clean engine oil before replacement! Plus I got the alloy lower boost pipe off - you’ll remember that my local garage had diagnosed a hissing under acceleration as a boost leak caused by this pipe (which is unique to the ATL / TDi90 and is NLA from Audi or anywhere else), being worn through by its clip that holds it still next to the engine’s sump by virtue of two small bolts - behold the damage:

1633243998341.jpeg

1633244039667.jpeg

Amazing that the car drive as well as it did and didn’t throw a warning light I think. I may try a repair with chemical metal and keep it as a spare in case of a need in future. The garage that first diagnosed the issue had said the clip that bolts to the sump and holds the pipe in place had broken - and that somehow this was the reason the pipe had been punctured - but careful comparison between the clip that came off the car with the pipe and the replacement good used one showed this to be incorrect - there is actually nothing wrong with it!

1633244361860.jpeg

Hmmm, comparing it to the good secondhand replacement pipe confirmed that this fault must be due to a design flaw with the clip, as this pipe too showed clear signs of wear in exactly the same place:

1633244417851.jpeg

So after a bit of head-scratching and careful alignment of the metal hose clamps, the pipe was reinstalled without the clip at all - only by deflecting it way more than normal engine rocking and vibrations would could I make it hit or rub on anything around it - so I’m calling that a good modification for safe-guarding the car’s future! I’m going to put a shout-out to TDi90 Owners to effect the same clip-delete mod ASAP, as talking with Audrey’s former owner Dave @Special edition, WOM have noted the same issue occurring on a high number of TDi90’s coming to them for work - so this could become a real problem as I already found it pretty hard to source good used pipes (thankfully I found two so I now have a spare plus I can repair this one).

Then it was time to replace the brand new missing cam cover insulation that sits below the top engine cover that I bought from @CreweAudi a while back - get yours now while they’re still available! They’re pretty fragile so you’ll definitely wed to replace yours at some point even if it’s still present now. It was a bit puzzling as to how it goes on but I think I got it in the end - although the piece to left above the cam cover may not be quite right - anyone know?

1633245036768.jpeg

Then once I’d done the sump plug up having replaced the filter, I refitted the engine cover and also the under tray. At this point I’d like to say massive thanks to Andy @Clackers for sending me a bag of spare fixings some time back for nothing, top man.

1633245235502.jpeg

There was only one screw I couldn’t install on the undertray - one of the crossmember holes was missing its insert so next time I order some parts from a breaker I’ll need a couple of those please sir!

The drive home was smooth and very quiet - it reminded me that whilst Akoya is a very nice car indeed (and I need to repeat pretty much all of the above work as a precaution, including of course the boost pipe clip delete), Audrey is my first love and by a whisker remains my favourite. The car really does drive like a very low mileage example and just seems to be that touch more refined somehow. I can’t wait to get her back into full-time custodianship.

Only job to do before she goes for her appointment with the man from the Ministry is to reset the service indicator. Can someone post a link on how to do that please?

As ever, @Birchall has the answer you require!

Great update sir. Glad the swarf issue looks like being a none issue.

The clip you’re referring to isn’t the one that supports the pipe as it goes into the intercooler is it? The reason I ask (and it may be different for the 75 so I’m happy to stand corrected as you’ve clearly done your research) is that on Tonka this clip was broken when we changed the intercooler over. From everything I’ve read on here this seemed to be considered, at the very least, a contributor to the end caps blowing on the intercooler and therefore intercooler failure. From observing how this bracket works, I certainly wouldn’t want to be without on my 75. As I say, perhaps the fact it is a rigid metal pipe may alleviate this issue or we could indeed be talking about two totally different brackets!

Keep up the good work and whatever you do, don’t let Akoya hear Audrey is your favourite or Akoya is certain to throw a diva strop and develop a really hard to diagnose intermittent fault!!

Thanks Erling - will try that.

The bracket I’m referring to is the one is located by two bolts going into the end of the sump underneath the timing belt, there’s a fair run of rubber pipe before it arrives at the intercooler. It’s part 19 in this diagram.

Looking at the same diagram for the TDI75, the same clip is used, but because the pipe is made of rubber, this issue doesn’t seem to be a problem.

Yep, it’s 100% the same bracket/clip, in the same place.

Can’t comment on the 90 with its more rigid metal pipe. On the 75 though I 100% would not remove it as it’s definitely needed to support that pipe. Did WOM indicate they recommend losing the clip/bracket on 90’s? If so then great as they’d know far more than I! If not then personally I’d be looking at finding a solution to stop the rubbing rather than simply ditching the bracket.

@Erlingtheelder basically Re engineered the bracket to ensure on Tonka it never broke again such was his conviction that it was imperative to protect the intercooler and prevent a reoccurrence of the issues that lead to its demise. That said, if he had a middle name (he doesn’t btw) it would be ‘overengineered’!!!
