Do I need the collapsible space saver?

My car did (I assume) at some point in its history have a spare wheel. I have the metal battery clamp with the threaded hole and a corresponding hole in my boot floor. The large plastic protection disc, securing bolt and wheel have gone.

The car is to be a daily driver.

I'm not a fan of tyre weld at all (previous experience) so I am looking at reinstating a spare wheel.

Would a standard steel spare or space saver fit in the lower boot or do I need the collapsable tyre?

How are these faring as they're all 15 years old at best?

I just have a full-sized SE wheel in my boot, with no false floor. Fits fine, and actually leaves a handy space to the side to put a few items without them rolling about. As to whether it would fit under the false floor, it would be tight but I think it would just about work.

The spacesaver wheels and fitting kits appear in the Market from time to time but I used a standard wheel as a spare. As long as you have the same overall diameter, it doesn't need to be the same as the four on the car and, if you go for a spare with a narrow width, perhaps 165 or 175, there will be less chance of the wheel causing the false floor not to lie flat.

I got a standard space saver wheel from the scrap yard for £20.It fits in the lower boot floor with room to spare. You need to make a cardboard template of your normal wheel centre hole and bolt holes and check this against the pile of space savers they usually stack up in the yard-good hunting!

I have both solutions between two A2's. When I go on longer journeys than my usual 20-mile commute in the one with the space-saver, I take the full-size spare from the other one with me instead. As has been said, wider tyres (OEM 16" reference size 185 width and above) may struggle to fit under the false floor, but the 15" 175 width seems fine. You can just about get away with the first oversize on the circumference too e.g. 185/55x16 vs reference 185/50x16. It's as if Audi designed the boot around the size of the roadwheel, or vice versa.

Speaking of the protection disc, I have trawled through 7zap but cannot find it to cross-reference the part number.

You have to really deep dive 7zap on this one. Eventually found it in boot trims, a long way away from the spare wheel kit in accessories!

part 24 below.

We have a collapsible spare in Adams A2 and a full size 17” spare as well if needs be. But the full size spare will be too tall to fit under the floor being 205 section.

A full size wheel must be the best option for long journeys, but how do those without a false floor secure them in the back of the car?
I don't suppose all sizes will be the same but, in my instance, the wheel was firmly jammed between the rear of the boot and the back of the seat base. I had to tip the seat in order to release the spare wheel; it couldn't move while I was driving.

On the other hand, I don’t carry a spare at all.

In all my years of motoring, the only time I recall needing one whilst on a journey was ultimately because the no-name budget that blew out on my mk1 Escort on the motorway was 15 years old and had been run whilst under-inflated (I was stupid as well as invincible back then).

Now that I only buy premium rubber and pay close attention to pressures / any sharp objects or stones caught in the tread, I drive carefully enough to see / be able to drive around potholes or other hazards - generally speaking I look after the tyres. This has meant I haven’t (touch wood) had a puncture in many years. For me, carrying good breakdown membership is most important just in case.

fickle finger of fate is now pointing straight at you Dave!!!!

I have been looking in to this and was going to buy an A2 collapsible tyre/wheel on eBay but it sold whilst I was away this week end....DOH!

There are a few A3 space savers available which are 125/70 R16 with ET25 (I think the A2 spare is ET28 so very close) and according to an online comparison tool, it would seem to -1.7% out which I assume would be easily acceptable on the non-driven rear axle (I would never use a space saver on the front). The problem is, I cannot work out if it is a 5x100 or 5x112 PCD.

So, if 5x100: -, does anyone else carry a real space saver and if so from what?
If it is 5x112, does anyone know where I can buy an A2 collapsible from?

Cheers
Simon

I have a collapsible A2 spare wheel that I'm not using that could be made available.

It is the complete full kit not just the wheel (which has never been used or inflated) with the bracket and bolts, locating mounting ring and wheel fixing screw?

But have you considered you will then need the large trim parts over the wheel arch that do not have the ugly holes in the existing that will be exposed by removing the brackets. No problem I expect to pick them up or swap with your buyer.

Sorry Tom and Simon to put a spanner in the works but best A2Z is aware.

??????????

Spare wheel carrier bolts onto of the battery location and a small hole is in the lower boot carpet that the plate and nut secure the wheel onto. No side trim is effected. Or have I got it wrong?

No, it's me I did not read carefully enough and just assumed the false floor and rails would be sold as well.
