Hi all, My drivers door strap linkage has started 'claking & banging 'each time I open/close the door. I have read the previous thread/links on this subject BUT has anyone 'actually' tackled the job as a DIY one??
I have checked pin behind rubber plug 'thats OK', the noise's are from inside the door itself.
Three questions,
1.Should I buy replacement strap unit, before starting the job?
2.If the problem is other end of linkage ie; opposite end from single pin, what is the Likely cause/and can it be repaired?
3.I will need to know; how to remove total door trim parts etc? to do job, finally should I attempt it!
Happy days Alan.

Dont mean to hyjack post but my n/s/r door strap needs doing if advice with suit any door!!:)
(no noise, just that door wont stay open).

Hi, Possibly the check strap fixing to the door frame itself is coming loose. wifeys car did the same thing, bit of loctite and job done

To be honest, that's pretty much all it can be as the arrester assembly is a self-contained unit, with virtually nothing to go wrong.

What you are probably hearing is the mounting plate pulling past a couple of threads on the 2 studs as you open or close the door.

To answer your questions Alan, don't bother with a new strap unit yet. YOu should be able to fix it yourself if it is just a case of a loose mounting plate - just buy a bottle of thread lock to use on the studs.

You should be able to tackle the job yourself, yes. Get yourself into the workshop manual, as I outlined earlier and go to 'Overview' then 'Body' then 'General Body Repairs, Exterior' then '57 Front Door, central locking' then 'Front Door' and the instructions on trim removal are in there.

Forget the part about needing a heated iron to remove the butyl sealing strip - just carefully peel it back.

Cheers,

Mike

PS

The door trim removal instructions are in the chapter 'eneral Body Repairs, Interior' sub-chapter '70 Trim, noise insulation', then 'Front door trim'

drivers door strap.

Hi Mike, Thank you for your detailed 'Info' Decided I would have a go (come what may!) so today Tues 31st; JOB DONE door is now as quiet as a Church mouse! lovely.
I took it slowly & guess what, the problem was metal FATIGUE, albeit 2 alloy rivets.
the door strap 'unit itself' is riveted to a cast alloy bracket L shaped which then secures complete unit to car door, again a piece of poor design by AUDI! as the strap has a double linked spring which exerts a very powerful pressure on linkage strap each opening/closure of door, the rivets are hollow type so stress will eventually cause fatigue ( my car is 2001 model) dont forget.
I cured the problem by removing broken rivet pieces & used nut/bolt plus heavy split spring washer, door now 'sound as a pound,I took some photographs so if anyone else has/or gets this problem E/mail me or PM, THANKS again,Alan.

Excellent news Alan - I trust you are now able to use the relevant parts of the workshop manual too?

I know that Richard- has a similar problem, so I'm sure that he'd appreciate the wisdom you've gained today.

Cheers,

Mike
