Drivers door checkstrap

Finally got round to changing to drivers door check strap today after six months of it making a horrendous noise! So I thought I'd upload a couple of videos of the strap once the door card was off.

As you can see the rivets have completely sheered off and it's no longer attached.

Just want to thank everybody for this posting.

Had horrendous sound when opening the door, and yes the rivets heads had sheared off.

I fixed with Nut's and bolts [temporary] and will look to order the bits, when I get a few minutes.

Just wanted to say thanks for the pdf guides, notes and videos...

...Very Useful.

Does anyone know of the correct lubrication procedure for the door check straps? I have 3 A2s and all have had white grease sprayed previously into the gap on the side of the door cards (and over the door cards!) and therefore over the strap and the outside of the rollers.

...

Yes! the 'door arrester' (rod/strap or whatever you want to call it) should be lubricated on the edge (3) that runs against the white rollers you've mentioned, at least according to Audi - see picture.

Likewise, the pin end of the strap on the car's A pillar should be lubricated (2). The rubber cover (1) should be removed to do this. This is supposed to be a part of an official service but I bet it gets forgotten by many.

Lastly, you're supposed to lubricate the lock cylinders too. All lubrication (i.e. both door arrester and lock cyl.) are meant to be done using the appropriately titled, "Lock cylinder lubricating spray" or G 052 778 A2 in VAG speak. However, I believe it is a lubricant with graphite within, giving the grey appearance that you mentioned finding - so a quick web search will reveal graphite lubricant sprays specifically for locks but without the VAG premium added!

EDIT: an example here (N.B. not endorsing the link as being either the best or cheapest)! http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/ambersil-graphite-lock-lubricant-n68jb

I can see your point about the rollers not rolling when grease is applied, but I would have thought that they may stop rotating if no grease is present.

Hello,
It was my turn to perform this operation.
Thanks for the excellent tutorial, I managed to do almost everything.
The tweeter was very difficult to remove, so I broke one cable welding.
Except the pillar pin, it is supposed to be very hard to remove?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I changed mine over the weekend. I choose not to remove the cables but to hang the unclipped door card using a bungee cord or similar.

This was a little difficult to remove as the pin is wedged in tight from the bottom. A few squirts of wd40 followed by some careful blows with a punch and rubber mallet sorted that removal. Just be careful not to strike the surrounding area.

The pin is shown on the right of the attached photo.uploadfromtaptalk1404231505900.jpg

It worked, thanks for the tip :)

You could try TPS but i think general public aren't allowed, trade only

Second hand straps are listed on ebay for around £15-20 but they probably no good

You're better off just buying from Audi, used will be false economy. It's an easy job to change. If there isn't an Audi dealer near you, Stoke Audi sell them online.

When you insert the pin, make sure you do it from underneath. Otherwise you'll have to drift it out and do it the correct way like I had to do thinking it made more sense to do it from the top the first time round.

@depronman Just did this repair with your amazingly well re-tooled checkstrap, forum info was great, filled me with confidence! Now I'm going to change the electric window switches while the door card is off!

Thanks all.

I had a check strap refubishing day I now have 9 available if anyone needs check straps

just replaced mine with @depronman 's straps.
no more knocking .
rivets on my old straps where in tact - it was just the nylon rollers worn out causing the knock

Added this thread with more hints and tips - plus dimensions of the rollers for those lucky chaps with a lathe (and a few hours of their lives to give up rather than going the easy route and sending for the depronman - rebuilt to perfection - check straps)

Cheers Spike
