DRL via fog light

I would like to install fog lights and use them as DRL. My idea is that DRL will turn on when I switch on the car and they should turn off once the low beam are on.
Does somebody know if it is possible to do this by using the light switch ?
There is a TFL pin on the switch light ( Tag Fahr Licht should be DRL ) but this has a red cable always with 12v. Thanks for suggestions!!

Hi @paolo_audi
On UK spec cars, there is a DRL output pin on the main light switch, but the mating pin on the connector is not fitted, (it can be retro fitted). It provides 12 V that comes on with ignition, and goes of with main lights.
Maybe Spanish build spec is different?
Maybe this thread will help.

Sorry guys, I have rechecked and you are right. The pin no.3 is free and I can connect my DRL.
Do you perhaps know pin code. Could it be 000 979 225 ( 2.8mm wide for 2.5mm wire ) ? Thanks

I’m having trouble in finding a way to enter cabin from engine side. There is a big wire on passenger side but even removing the rubber cannot thread fog cable. Any suggestions? Thanks !!

There is a rubber grommet directly above the cable release for the bonnet / hood on the driver's side on an LHD car.

I have checked but this hole close to the bonnet cable doesn’t go in the engine space.
Should I open the wheel arc to see this cable ?

use a stiff cable to push through from the inside of the car. You will then go up the wheelarch liner. Make sure the end of the cable is not sharp. The liner is not very easy to get out and put back in.

Thanks Bret ! I have already removed the wheelarc in order to paint it. I have seen out to remove it. Unfortunately I have reinstalled it a couple of week ago. Will remove it again and follow your instructions.. thanks !!

Hi guys,
I need your help again. I have ordered right pin for headlight connector in order to connect DRL light to pin 3 as suggested. But it seems impossible to insert new pin into connector.
It doesn’t enter. New Audi connector has a purple lock that opens the connector but this one has nothing. I wonder I have to use the same tools that I normally use to remove pins to try to insert the new pin. Is this the right way ?

Hi @paolo_audi
Did you sort this out? I'm about to do the same job. I thought the pin, with wire attached, just pushed into the back of the existing connector, In the vacant position.

The issue is that if you try to push the pin from the back it doesn’t go through. There is something that lock its entrance. I have searched on the web and found this guide that explain how to insert extra pin in this VW connector. It seems that it is necessary to insert from the front the VAG 1978/35-7 to open the connector then it is possible to push it in from the back side. I have checked at my Audi dealer but they don’t have this tool to lend me. So I will try to buy a generic set for pin removal and try with it.
Unluckely this is a quite unusual connector as most of them have the purple unlock that makes the procedure very simple.
I will keep you updated …

Cheers, and good luck.
I have this tool:
Laser 3932 Terminal Tool https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003AN1NPK/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glc_fabc_S4T8C5ZBQWYAHV8Y0JX6
Which I used to replace the plastic shell of the coil pack connector on my Mk1 TT. That connector has the purple lock. From memory, you need this tool to remove a pin, but not to put it back in.

Hi Mac,
I have used a Beta tool ( see picture ). It is similar to the one you’ve suggested me.
I have inserted it from connector front side then I’ve pushed the new pin from back side and it went through easily pushing out the tool.
Now I can connect my DRL !!

Thanks @paolo_audi
I'll check my tool out. Let us know when you've got the DRLs working.
We've got so used to cars having DRLs, that it's easy to miss those that don't.
