Dual Mass flywheel failure and driving it....

Hi Folks,
So, one of my TDI90's has an MOT due tomorrow. I don't use it anymore as always using my veg powered TDI90, it is used by my partner.
In preparation for MOT tomorrow i just moved it onto the drive and noticed a horrible clattering noise when at lower revs with clutch up in neutral. The noise disappears when clutch pushed in.
Car is on 162k, had a replacement dual mass around 90,000, so maybe due.
Questions - does it sound like dual mass - it is definitely gearbox side, clattering and not consistent, but sounds bad. what can go wrong driving it to MOT 10 miles, then though the MOT, should i cancel MOT and repair before testing? ideally, i'd put it through test and repair in slow time so i can still park it on the street with MOT etc.

cheers nod

Jdd and dual mass needs bell housing grinding out
Smf and jdd should be ok
I have a single mass flywheel in stock if you need one off an AMF engine. No cracking /blueing etc and good starter ring teeth

Veg power? Have you ever done a thread on this? Sounds interesting!

Dual mass flywheels tend to vibrate thru the clutch pedal and can clatter at idle, I have heard T5 transporters with only 15k on them clatter at idle but were fine so I really wouldn't worry, when they get real bad they tend to take out the hydraulics first mainly the slave as a general rule. You will probably fine after a run it stops anyway!

I’d say either an early failure of DMF (does your partner change up early in it and/or habitually use lots of throttle at sub 1600or so RPM?) or possibly a clutch release bearing if you’re lucky. Either way it’s gearbox off time so defo have your longer legs ready for it to go on Nod 👍

Sounds like classic DMF failure to me. Will likely be silent and fine while gently driving but bang and clatter at tickover. See what happens if you raise the revs in neutral?

Indeed, lots of changing into wrong gear early and trying to plough up steep hills at low revs going on ....nevermind.

in neutral, the clattering eases off at higher revs but there is a bit of vibration coming through the car, pretty sure its dmf

Almost certainly given the above. Do you have a new one to hand?
I don't have a spare dmf, will start looking in the new year. May go SMF route from AMF engine, I've done that on my other tdi90. Certainly not as smooth driving but much cheaper option. Cheers
