eCall comes into effect this month

Just read an article that eCall comes into effect this month. All new cars are now required to make an emergency call automatically after a serious accident (i.e. where the air bags inflate). The eCall will send time, location, direction of travel, type of car and fuel type info to the police (in the UK) who will be able to talk to the driver as all cars will have a microphone. Police then decide what action to take. ECall can also be activated by a vehicle occupant pressing a button.

Biggest challenge in the UK is in training emergency call handling operatives, as data and voice calls both need to be processed, potentially on the same call. Seems that while the telecomms technology is now in place the training is lagging.

I think this has been standard in a quite a number of new vehicles for a couple of years. Our Q7 has both this 'accident' auto notification facility and also a seperate breakdown link direct to Audi assistance. The former does not require human intervention whereas the latter requires the push of a button but not related to your own mobile phone.
