Effect of heavy rain

Hi,
I have a 2002 Audi 1.4 with panoramic roof. On Sunday for the third time in about two years when the car was on the driveway there was a heavy downpour of rain and the car automatically opened both front windows halfway and latterly set off the alarm.
A neighbour luckily knocked to tell us that the windows were open. The car was locked.
The seats and inside of the doors were soaking and took a couple of days to dry out.
A similar thing has happened in the past when we experienced very hot weather, with the car opening the windows.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so does anyone know the answer to stop this happening, we were fortunate that on previous occasions the car was on our driveway and not parked somewhere that it could be stolen?
Maybe I just have a “Herbie” version!
Thanks
Kate

Hi Kate,

The A2 has the ability to open to windows, roof from the key fob (so you can get hot air out even at distance) could someone have been pressing the fob accidentally in a pocket?

Hold lock to close all windows
Hold unlock to open.

Are you sure that you didn't sit on the remote, or similar?

Disable the global opening as this can cause the aforementioned effect via pocket or bag operation, there is a thread on this somewhere.

Hi Kate,

I can think of two possible causes...

Firstly, if you press and hold the unlock button on the key fob, the windows will drop. Is it possible, with your key in a back pocket or your handbag, that the unlock button has accidentally been pressed down?

If you're 100% certain that this isn't the cause, then it could be that your car has a faulty Central Convenience Control Unit (CCCU). Earlier A2s in particular suffer from an unreliable CCCU. A faulty CCCU can cause a variety of bizarre symptoms affecting the interior lights, electric windows, alarm, central locking, fuel cap release, etc. Many of the nice little comforts that are common to all A2s depend upon the CCCU to function properly.
I'd wager that your 2002 A2 has either the Q or P version of the CCCU, both of which are the most likely to fail. Should you need it, alongside all my other A2 electrical services, I offer CCCU replacement at circa 10% of the cost of Audi dealerships.

Cheers,

Tom

This has happened to me twice in 5 years. Don't know why. Certainly wasn't accidentally pressing the key fob. I put it down to "one of those things".

Thank you for your replies, after using the key fob it is put onto a side table and was not accidentally activated on any of the occasions.
One theory I was offered is that it is a safety feature, if the car detects that is under water the windows will open to allow the driver/passenger to escape. As it is made by German engineers this doesn’t seem too far fetched, and I must admit on those times that it has happened it has been under a deluge of rain!
As for the time it happened in the hot weather, perhaps it is considerate of the driver getting into an overheated car.
Who knows?
I do appreciate the sensible reasons though, and has given me food for thought, I will have to weigh up the cost of CCCU repair against the inconvenience once in a while if having a wet seat.
