EGR and Turbo quest

Hi All,

Having sorted my Clutch with quite a lot of frustration peeling gearbox off and then massaging it back in the place time to move on to next less major issue.

So something is bleeding oil - it is not a whole lot but it is a bit of a dribble seems mostly when running as i do not have any drizzle under the car where it is parked. It is definitely behind engine though as it is just above the driver side drive shaft.

While it is nice and stopping pressed steel suspension bits from rusting I think I'll try and sort it out.

Can anyone advise what common issues are, it does look like it is the bit at very top that is bleeding oil (EGR valve?) and slowly dribbling down and a bit on top of gearbox over time running down the intake hose. I am hoping it is not the turbo but knowing my luck it probably will be.

If it is turbo are there any options i could use as a direct swap other than one from TDI 90? that is without machining/drilling bits - or only upgraded part would be to send it to turbo dynamics or another company to make it a hybrid turbo and refurbish?

Will i need any gaskets/seals etc. i can get ahead of time (serviceable bits?) as i'd like to be as ready as i can be and get it banged out in a weekend as I would like to drive to work :D. I can see where @A2 Louis comes from with his collection as i feel i need more parking space so i can have another A2 or 2 to drive while i have this one apart as to not miss it too much.

Common locations for leaks on the TDI are the tandem pump on the side of the block and EGR valve as you've mentioned.

The can also be oil dripping from anywhere from the output of the turbo right the way around to the intercooler and beyond, but for there to be enough to cause a visible leak, the turbo would have to be pretty knackered to be letting that much oil go past its seals and you would be seeing burnt oil out of the exhaust in the form of smoke.

As for direct turbo replacements, there aren't any i'm aware of for the 90. The GT1749VA from the PD130 can be made to fit by cutting a branch off the manifold, but it would then need a professional remap to get it running right.

If you lived in Leicester you could of borrowed Boris for a week until you was back on the road :)

he’s in the garage at the minute staying all nice and clean and keeping his new boots warm while it’s awful outside?

Where about is Tandem Pump? Somewhere between EGR (i assume it is EGR right at the top just under the air duct) and turbo?

as what i assume is EGR is quite oily thus i assume that is the culprit slowly sludging oil down onto turbo bits especially as there is oil slowly running down that air intake hose on right side of engine (when looking at it with bonnet off). It looks like it is ready for some slip and slide action with the nice layer of dust oil on it.

How bad is access there? I'll have to wait for some drier days as it is pouring down quite a bit currently to tackle this.

No, the tandem pump is on the right hand side of the engine block as you look into the engine bay, to the right hand side of the rocker cover.
