Emission Control System Problem

The Emission Control System warning light came on today on my 54 reg. TDI 90. There is only a brief comment in the handbook saying that the system needs to get checked as soon as possible. But as it is only a category 2 warning and not a 'show stopper' I doubt my local dealer will be willing or able to have a look at it in a hurry.

Anyone know what the implications are, or indeed what the Emission Control System is or does? The car doesn't seem to behave any differently but I would appreciate advice in case I need to panic! (The car is still under Audi extended warranty).

Thanks, Yossarian

hi ..i had the same problem a month ago.ran it for 10 days no problem ran like a dream.thinking the light would go out on its own but it never .so i took it for a diagnostic check turned out to be the fuel temp sensor .they never changed the sensor just reset the light .and the light has never come back on .what i did notice under the bonnet it had a tuning chip fitted so i took that off .think that was my problem
skipton said to me you can run the car with no problem but you should
get a diagnostic check when you can
hope this helps

Thanks Knocker. It didn't feel like a major problem but it's nice to have some reassurance. I won't panic yet!

You should let the dealer know about it as soon as possible Yossarian as you are still covered by the warranty. It is then up to them to fit you in and if something happens in the interim, you can't say you didn't tell them (not that it;s likely to).

Cheers,

Hi Guys,

Did you get any joy with this problem ? My Emmision Control Light (orange) has appeared. The performance of the engine seems normal, the checks when turning the ignition on are all OK. Is there anything i can do to get to the bottom of this without taking the car for a £65 computer check at the Audi garage ? The car is coming up 4 years old, so out of warranty. Am i OK to keep driving the car ?

Cheers,
Doug.

I have also had this problem the last 2 weeks on my 53 1.4 TDI. No change in performance at all.

I have a blackhorse extended warranty which doesn't cover "wiring looms" and wear and tear. Does anyone know whether this sort of issue, even if its just resetting the light, will cost me anything? I'd rather leave it until it goes in for a service in a few months if I have to pay for a scan just to find out it won't be covered......

Thanks,

James

Doug, James, if either if you are near to Manchester, you're welcome to a scan here for a club contribution.

I have full diagnostic kit and the ability to use it fully.

Cheers,

Mike
