Thanks for the help. To be honest I'm not 100% the leak was from there but the oil presence was all around the casing, so it was my first thought but only after cursory investigation. After wiping away and not moving the car it drips no more, so looks likely only happening after driving. I will drive the car a few miles and have another look. CheersThere's gearbox oil on the other side, so don't take it off without draining the box first!
There's no gasket, instead it will use sealing paste between the cover and the gearbox casing.
Are you sure the cover is leaking? It's the lowest point so check the surroundings first, cleaning dirt as necessary to check that the leak is not higher up.
Thanks for the advice. I'll have a thorough look. Perhaps more serious than I'd hoped but hey on the bright side, I was intending to change the gearbox oil anywayI think you'll find the leak could well be from the output shaft area of the box - the seeping will then travel down to the cover area as it's the lowest point and will gather there.
I had issues on Tank similar to this and it was the nearside (UK) output seal that was at fault.
Oh that does sound a bummer. I could do without another 'pig of a job' - oddly enough one of the last jobs Tony did on my TDi was a driveshaft overhaul....I sold the car about 6 months later - did about 10 miles last night to get some dog food, this morning not a drip or drop of oil under the car. More investigation required it seemsyes its more likely to be the drive shaft oil seal , the right hand side one is a common fault to fail
pig of a job , but we have done a few now and made special tools to do this
Thanks. Just to verify....you're saying I need to remove a (dogbone) mounting bracket is order to drain the gearbox oil....or just in order to give easier access to the fill plug ?Drain plug is under the rear dogbone mount bracket (three big bolts) on underneath of box and fill plug is hiding further up the back of the gearbox - looks the same as the drain plug. Should be able to see it when you are under taking the dogbone off.
You need to move the dogbone to get proper access - if you try and move without actually unbolting its likely you'll damage / rip the rubber and then have to replace.Thanks. I'm not familiar with this box, on my A2 the drain is under the dog bone bracket. What is that plug there on the diff under the CV joint. I don't recall one of those on my car.Hey chaps, sorry to resurrect an old-ish thread but have done a bit of head scratching on this one and I think I know where the oil is leaking from.
The corner of this gasket that seals the gearbox end plate has a collection of oil around it that I think over a few days is rolling onto the gear lever end cap and collecting there. You can see it dripping from the picture (single arrow)

I have the gasket and 2L of transmission oil ready - just wondering if any of you guys have got the same gearbox and happen to know which of these bolts on the underside would be the drain plug, and also where I might find the fill plug as well. Tried to research this on A2OC myself but I have yet to see any diagrams or explanations that match my configuration above.
I'm sure someone out there can point me right. Cheers in advance all
yesThanks chaps. I'm on my second A2 and have never heard of this bracket before. Will investigate........is this it?

Thanks, that very helpful - when '413' said above to look out for large allen socket, I did see that clearly visible large socket on the right of the picture and consider it an obvious suspect.you can see the drain plug in your picture showing the oil leak, its under the the drive shaft out put flange, to the right. the fill plug is next the drivers side out put shaft a bit higher up. your profile shows an fsi engine so 02T GCD,GKZorGSK gearbox, oh and 17mm allen key socket
