Engine Earth again

I know this has been covered many times, but this is a bit different. I’ve been having starting problems for a while now, so I decided to check the engine earth after reading up on the problem.
I removed the passengers side headlight found the earth bolt & fitted the correct size socket, it seemed a bit tight but then seemed to be coming undone until the head sheared off the bolt. With no engine earth the car wouldn’t start at all, so I used a self tapping screw as a temp earth & put the engine earth back onto the alloy bar & it started up no problem.
Obviously this is just a temporary fix, has anyone else had this problem & found a permanent solution?

Hi,

do a full Earth mod it's easy to do! ie: Earth top of strut, earth top of engine, earth alternator, earth lower block, earth to front lights, earth to window wiper, earth from battery to rear of car body for better radio reception and grounding. As said here there are loads of places to take a new earth point from.

I particularly recommend the one from the wiper motor to the cylinder head/engine block, what a difference that makes to the wipers.

How to do: Get a 15mm plumbing pipe flatten it uniformly with a mallet then clean with a grinder till shiny use a sand head disc on grinder, drill a 10mm hole in the pipe and cut it to about 4-5 niches length, drill another hole the other end.

Screw off the bolt under the scuttle panel that holds the wiper motor, there should just be enough room to slip this flat pipe in between the wiper actuator arm and body without it fouling, thoroughly clean the aluminium motor surface around bolt first with sandpaper and then WD40 it. Get some 1cm thick speaker power cable and solder end fixing loops either end of 18 to 22 inch length of cable and bolt this cable to the copper pipe then ground it on the cylinder head, watch your windscreen wiper fly with full power.

If I get a chance I'll post some photos.

Cheers

Doug

If you could much appreciated. Hadn't realised how bad the wiper in my everyday car was until I was driving my project car in the rain the other day and the standard intermittent sweeping speed was about twice as fast as my normal car's wiper at full pelt where it is leisurely to say the least!

These cables on ebay are customisable for length and both end fittings, work great as earth for starter and wiper motor. Just select the length and diameter of both ends.
