Engine management light on, but ECU not picking it up from PC!

I have a 2001 1.4. The engine light has been on and off for 2 years, recently (July) had all ignition leads replaced. CV boot and coil spring for MOT (Oct)... also engine temp coolant sender unit replaced a year ago.
My friend has plugged into the computer for a reading but the ECU isn't reading anything. He also tried it in His Mothers car and is working fine.
HELP?
Lisa

Hi Lisa, welcome to the A2oc.
Unless your friend is using RossTech VagCom kit, its not uncommon for some diagnostic scanners to work on one car but not another. I'm not sure if we have any 'VagCom' members local to you but if not, consider having a scan done by an Audi/VW specialist.
There are so many possibilities for the engine light that a scan is the best way forward

Cheers Spike

It has worked b4 on my car, thats why im comfused.com :D
Bur thinking of taking for a FREE health check at Audi, I bet they find LOTS of faults LOL

It is ok to find lots of faults, but the most important thing is to get the all the error codes and ideally a full print out of what the scanner said, you don't have to have it fixed there.

Like Spike said, this can easily be done at any audi/vw/seat/skoda garage and should take more than 10 mins work. I also have a non-rosstech scanner and it kind of works on my A2 but flaky on others I've tried. However, my friend's real Rosstech scanner works on everything vw, audi...etc.
