Engine mounts

There's occasionally a faint clunk when accelerating from standstill on my TDi 90, which I suspect is due to one or more worn engine mounts. Any tips for determining which one(s) need replacing (I understand there are three) and are they an easy DIY job to do?

When looking to change the dogbone mount, use the one for the polo 9n TDI, it’s about 15% of the price of a new A2 one from Audi. The A2 specific one is no longer available (or so I’m reliably informed).

Just swap the steel section over as that is the only difference .

Thanks all.
Is the dogbone mount an easy swap?
How can I tell if the others need doing too?

Hi Martin, the dog bone is easy, one bolt into a captive nut in the subframe and the bracket to the gearbox with 3 bolts (or 2 with MYP for yours?). All very easy to access after removing the undertray. The OS engine mount is unlikely to need changing and is not too bad to access after removing air inlet ducting. The NS (top) gearbox mount is fairly unlikely to need changing - it’s a pain as so far as I recall you have to drop the gearbox and engine down on that side about 50mm to be able to get to the horizontal console bolts via under the inner wing. This means removing the dog bone, disconnecting battery, various stuff that is in the way of accessing the 2 vertical top mounting bolts (from the top), all the time taking care not to stress things like the exhaust flexi, oil and dipstick tubes.

Thanks Matt! I'll start with the dogbone mount then an see how it goes. Yes the MYP box might change things slightly. Sounds like a job within my limited skillset though.
Cheers,

@BiggDogg can confirm been there few weeks ago - the top mount gearbox side is a pain in the ass if you're not dropping the gearbox - needs to be dropped a fair bit more than 50mm i'd reckon - didn't try but would reckon drive shafts would need to be removed to get the gearbox down enough.

Sorry Tom, now you have me wondering who Martin is... good luck anyway.

Replaced my main gearbox mount a couple of months ago - a trolley jack really helps. Regular jack on passenger side, wheel and arch liner off, trolley jack under the sump, remove old mount, lower trolley until bottom bolts appear. Most difficult bit was getting all the holes on the top part of the new mount to line back up for the bolts - took a while adjusting the heights of the trolley and jack on passenger side.

Right, I've now sourced a dogbone mount.
Is this what I'll need if I want to do the other two?

Any better brands/prices out there?

Any tips for where to source #10? 8Z0 199 212 J
I can't find one in stock anywhere.
Are there any alternative parts that would fit (like the Polo 9N dogbone)?

I have just bought the polo 9n TDI dog bone.i offered it up along side the A2 and it looks exactly the same. Its being fitted when I get the time. Also found the #17 mount on ebay?.I googled the A2 OEM number and found a QH version. The only difference is it doesn't have the brace socket to the starter motor.with the price I paid I'll take the chance

I've been talking to my garage this week about a new LH engine mount, and the message they've had from all of their suppliers is 'dealer only'. Unfortunately, the only one available from (I assume) TPS is the RH, and that's somewhere around 350 quid.

Does anyone know a source of the LH mount, or am I going to have to resort to second hand?

Why would a S/H example be any better than the original? Depends how urgently you need it I suppose but I am used to waiting for parts for non-UK models!
