Engine Noise

Hello all,

My A2 has recently developed a noise eminating from the engine that sounded like it was the radiator fan. However having looked in the engine bay I've found that the noise is infact eminating from some-where under the brake fluid reservoir, which is located on the left hand side of the engine bay towards the back (as opposed to on the right as indicated in my manual??!!)

Like I said it sounds like some sort of fan, it can get quite loud (i.e. audible in the cabin with radio down low or off). I've not noticed a change in peformance and every thing seems okay. Although I have noticed a faint acrid smell from time to time when the climate control is on?

Any ideas what it may be? Is it something to be worried about?

cheers!

Hi alexm

If you have the tdi model and it only hapens in cold weather, then it could be the auxiliary diesel powered coolant heater (works a bit like a miniature central heating boiler) This comes on automatically at temps below 6C but can be overridden by the econ button on the climate control panel.

Cheers Spike,

Yes its an 02 tdi. I'll try it in econ mode tomorrow and see if that stops it, atleast then I can pin point its origin.

Any idea why there's a faint acrid smell through the air con?

Thanks once again. This forum is so good!!!!!

cheers!

Hi again
It could be the exhaust fumes from the heater. The small exhaust pipe exits from under the bumper, not too far from the front drivers side wheel. Normally you can only smell the fumes from outside the car. If it's not that, it could be bacteria/ mould building up on the air con condenser core. There are special aerosol sprays available for this or the dealer can clean it.

Cheers Spike

Cheers once again Spike!!

The aerosols, I take it they're available from Audi?

Hi alexm, one last thing........

I should have done this first - did a search and found this thread

Cheers Spike

Blimey that was a read and a half!! The smell is more acrid than mouldy but I'll give the anti-bacterial spray a go and see if that helps.

I half to say that judging from what's been written about the dealers they're about as much use as a chocolate fire surround!! My experience is they're a bunch of stuck up 'bar-stewards' who want to do a credit check on you before they'll even let you through the dealership door!! Maybe they should subscribe to this forum, they might learn some info about how the cars actually work!!

cheers
