Engine overheat warning light

The red engine warning light comes on on my 2001 A2 1.4 petrol just after starting up ( so stone cold ) and then reappears intermittently throughout the journey. Can I remove a fuse or is there a cheap fix?

Its not uncommon for a temperature sensor to go faulty or connections to get a little corrosion. Mabe look at the plug and wiring to the sensor. What you really need to do is get the car scaned with Vagcom it may give you a fault code to follow up. It would be a bad idea to remove a warning system.

There are many members with vagcom, where are you located??

The coolant warning lamp can indicate low coolant level or high temps. If the coolant temp gauge functions normally and does not exceed 90c and the coolant is up to the mark in the header tank then it could be a faulty coolant level sensor.
Its false economy to cut corners when dealing with any warning lamps.

Thanks for the replies. I will check the level at lunchtime. I didn't know it indicated a low level as well as overheating. I do park it on a slight slope overnight so it all sounds likely.
