Engine Swap

Ok, so after reading so many posts about the 1.6FSI and knowing mine has EML issues that appear to be masked I’ve been chatting to a really good friend who isn’t afraid of assisting in a decent size project.

I’m very close to letting him look further into a 1.9TDI conversion for the A2 with associated upgrades, am I crazy to even consider?

The car isn’t a mint example, but thinking maybe I invest, make a great car and keep for the long term. Or do I leave this as a daily and invest in a better example

Either way, I think I’m keeping this one and enjoying it. Not driven the RS in 2 weeks!

As the 1.4 tdi IS the 1.9 tdi with a cylinder chopped off would have thought Audi would have saved the expense and just used the 1.9 to start with. Not saying it can't or hasn't already been done. There are 1.4 tdi's out there with more power than the 1.9 tdi.

I've thought about the 1.9tdi transplant many times as it's a fantastic bulletproof engine that is good for 130 or 150bhp in standard unmodified guise and as audifan says it is just a 4 cylinder version of the 3 cylinder 1.4tdi that we love do much in our A2's so would have thought would be fairly straightforward for someone with the relevant experience and i'm sure it has been done many times before but I certainly wouldn't be contemplating a 1.9tdi into a 1.6fsi if that is what you are proposing, as that would be an absolute nightmare ??

If you want to stay with petrol, how about transplanting a 1.8BAM Tfsi engine. That really would give an improvement?

The 1.8T is a great petrol engine too and can be mapped to ridiculous levels. A pal of mine has fitted them into lots of cars.
Not quite the economy of the tdi's unfortunately though?

I have a mate with a couple of good 1.8T’s sat ready to go
Into a car

Mounting the engine and the mechanicals for a 1.8t should be easy enough, most likely could use an engine mount kit for the lupo.

The wiring would be the real work, I would start looking at wiring diagrams. The ecu for a bam should play nice with an a2 dash..

There are a few swaps to 1.9TDI from 1.4 that can be found on googler, but space is very tight in engine bay with it, should be easier with petrol, as it would be marginally larger than 1.6 FSI I'd imagine...

Messing about with the 1.4 ATL, I am not sure why better injectors are not compatible, as they seem exactly same as injectors in my 2.0 TDI in the A4, and the 1.9/2.0 are plenty tuneable and have plenty of options for injectors etc. maybe will go that route at some point, saving any little job becoming a font end off job with 1.9 stuffed in.

I guess question is how much pain can you tolerate :D

The engine bay space between a tdi and petrol are exactly the same

Engine itself is smaller for the 1.8/2.0 petrol and diesel of same displacement though - Seen the newer petrol in A5 and they seem more like a little hamster in that huge engine bay than something pushing 200bhp. Would imagine swap to a larger Petrol motor would be a fair bit easier as far as chopping to make space goes than massaging a diesel lump in of same displacement.

Oh I see I thought you were saying

1.6fsi > 1.9tdi

And

1.4tdi > 1.9tdi

And that the 1.6fsi would have more space.
