Engine temp

I think the temp sender is dual output so one signal goes the the engine ECU and the other to the temp gauge. You can monitor coolant temps using VagCom so it would be useful to know what the actual temp is while the gauge is reading low.

I would say so too. If nothing else, at least you know the sensor will be ok. What was the condition of the sensor when you pulled out the old one?

The old sensor was pretty clagged up to be honest, so it looked like it needed changing anyway .
