EPC Light on again.

Here we go again. I think the car is rebelling. Been thinking about swapping it for something easier to get in and out of when in the garage. Filled it with Shell plus last tank (1.4 petrol) which I do sometimes as a couple of weeks ago it suddenly cut momentarily when pulling uphill. Rev counter zeroed then everything cut back in and nothing since. Yesterday refilled with ordinary unleaded, did a few miles then when reversing it lurched and stalled and the epc and engine management light came on. Epc went off after about 3rd restart but car jerky when on clutch, management light now off, and no codes showing by time I got to my pal with code reader. Have replaced both clutch and brake switches sometime ago still awaiting vac pipe that rubs (although mine looks and feels ok) been on back order 5 months. and today running fine.??? Think I will tell it Im keeping it, maybe it will decide to behave. Any thoughts would be welcomed. Cheers Colin

Hi Colin, I think quite a lot of people have had the strage momentry loss of power on the 1.4 petrol see: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?2302-Sudden-loss-of-power

There are other threads about this same problem dotted around the forum described differently. I have the same issue sometimes, probably happens around 3/4 times a year. Certainly is a shock/jolt when it happens (less than a second) but with no fault codes or warning lights, and it's rare occurance it's difficult to diagnose. Personally I find it usually happens going 70+ on the motorway for long periods.

As for your reverse/stall issue I'm not sure but could be a completly different issue..

Thanks VonB. Yes Im sure the two arn't related, been out again today and every now and then it ran badly in bottom and reverse, which it has done on and off since I got it 18 months ago. Have spoken to Audi in the past and they more or less said just put up with it as you could spend a fortune and still not cure it, also same response from local Audi specialist who said that the 1.4 is known to be a problem and dont bother until it gets much worse. I might book it in to Audi to check to see if it ever had the 2002 ecu upgrade that has been mentioned on here. Trouble is if it hasnt it is free but if it has there is a charge, and as I only use them for bits I doubt they will be sympathetic. Thanks anyway. Reassuring to know that mine isnt the only one that has momentarily cut out. Cheers Colin. Told it today if it dosnt buck its ideas its a gonner.

Battery, alternator voltage? I've never had cut outs like that. Only time I had was a dying OE battery, but when it cut, it stops with all lights flashed up. Engine would restart with the ignition straight away. If the EPC or management light came on, surely there must be some code logged?

You would have expected a code, but nothing. Epc light was on a couple of days, but I understand that it can clear with no codes if it was a temporary fault (like starting then stopping before the engine had warmed up) which I never ever do, but you would think the management light which stayed on for 3 days should throw up a code. ?? but nothing by the time I managed to get it checked. My 'man' said sometimes it will only show a code when the light is on depending what is causing it. Its running ok at the mo, so fingers crossed. Cheers Guys.
