erratic revs

hi forum
My little one has been running well for at least a month now so i have been happy. However, this month's problem seems to be an eratic tick over evidenced on the rev dial as an increase up to between 2000 - 4000 when standing, which then drops to normal. If this is going to be a big (as in expensive) problem, i am going to be unhappy with with the whole audi scene and sell to buy another reliable renault to go with my clio.

Hi Dicko,

I had an identical experience many years ago after I purchased my Vauxhall Calibra. If memory serves right it was a fault with the idle control valve, (or something similar). This was replaced under network Q warranty for me and if your A2 is still under manufacturer warranty, it may be worth seeing how you stand!!

Shouldn't cost the earth if you have to fork out for one though - assuming that is of course it isn't a labour intensive job and this is indeed the fault. :(

Vagcom may source your problem; either a dealer check or a forum member who lives close to you.

Good luck!!

cheers darren
this has put my mind at ease. i am going to book car into garage to get it checked over.
wife said it does not have any effect upon driving and thus you are probably right about some sort of idle problem only and not the ecu unit.
will let you know results. :)

In general the fault with the Calibra materialised when the car was stationary or when the clutch was depressed and did not greatly effect acceleration from memory. The rev counter would fluctuate between 1000 rpm to around 3000 rpm.

I would say that if the symptoms are identical, then there is a good chance that this may be the right diagnosis. I know ECU's can have problems, but I would probably bet against this sort of failure with the symptoms you describe; especially if everything else appears fine in general day to day driving.

The garage visit should provide the answer; hope it is a cheap fix.

Cheers,

Darren
