Hi guys,

I had my engine management light come on yesterday and after reading the trouble code p0404 and looking on the net as to what it could be i think the egr value has gone.

Could anyone tell me where it is on my a2? its a 2002 1.6FSI. On tickover its idling rough and i have a dramatic loss of power. It basically sounds like its misfiring but its not.

Could anyone help?????

Cheers

hi graham as a fellow fsi owner i think i may be able to help.your egr valve is located at the back of the engine on the right hand end-looking from front of the car.it is just after the throttle body-it has a small diameter metal pipe that feeds it with exhaust gas-this comes from the ex manifold and runs under the high pressure fuel pump.the egr itself is electronically controlled and the connector is at its rear.the unit is quite simple in operation and quite easy to clean-once removed.
i would say that it may have broken inside or has a piece of carbon that is holding the valve open. the valve has sensors to tell the ecu where it is so it looks like it is operating over its working range as you are not getting the egr valve position errors.
if you want to get a new one they are approx £160 of the top of my head.i do know of someone that has a brand new Audi part please pm me if you are interested.
hope this helps cheers mike

Thank you a2sumo. I have just been to look at where the value is and to my shock found one of the ignition coils had completely popped out and melted. I suspect this is the reason why i got the error message? Thanks again.

just goes to show -- the error codes can be a shot in the dark. one point when fitting new coil packs is not to use any lubricant or grease on the rubber parts,as when the enging is up to temp this heats the lube or grease up and pops the coil pack off!!
glad you spoted an easy fix mike

Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
Reduced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
Reduced Power Output/Engine running rough
Increased Emissions

Possible Causes
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve stuck open/leaking/faulty
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System leaking/faulty
Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve faulty

Possible Solutions
Check/Clean Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System

16490/P0106/000262 - Manifold / Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71) / (F96): Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms
Erratic Idle

Possible Causes
Wiring and/or Connections from/to Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) faulty
Leak in Air Intake and/or Exhaust
Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96) faulty
Engine Control Module faulty

Possible Solutions
Check Engine Control Module Software Version
See Special Notes for Details
Check Timing
See Special Notes for Details
Check Wiring and/or Connections from/to Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96)
Check for Leak in Air Intake and/or Exhaust
Check/Replace Manifold/Barometric Pressure Sensor (G71)/(F96)
Check/Replace Engine Controle Module

Special Notes
On certain smaller Engines we've seen cases where a buggy Engine Control Unit Firmware can cause these fault codes, additionally there are known Problems with the Timing Chain Tensioners which can also result in these fault codes. Please refer to the related TPL/TSB for more instructions.

I had this error. I removed the valve and cleaned it. But I noticed that there was not fixed pipe at the inlet valve. I still collected and the error disappeared. So I can not say exactly what went wrong- or dirty valve or not to fix him the bolts in pipe.

P.S. The valve was not bolted bolts No. 24 and 37 on the tube number 35.

Thanks guys. I thought the prob was caused by the faulty ignition coil but the lights come on again so I think it must be a faulty value. How difficult is it to change the value? Also I sometimes get the smell of petrol coming into the car. It doesn't happen all the time and normally only when it's cold? Any further ideas? Thanks again

I think that the computer diagnosis accurately indicates the location problem is the valve recycling. Ignition coil is in good condition, тhe problem is not them.
