Exhaust options please!

Hi all, I’m looking to get my exhaust worked on after B&F told me it’s falling apart. ( I own a 1.4 petrol) They’ve kindly patched it up in a few areas, and I’ve come across a solution I’m leaning toward-

I’ve found a custom stainless steel exhaust garage called Infinity Exhausts in Bristol that has already given me a quote to replace my flexi, and centre exhaust bits. Martin from infinity jacked the car up and showed me that those parts were basically falling apart and needed replacing real soon.

For the prices quoted, I think it’s quite fair really? And a custom stainless steel solution would seem like the best long term solution ( especially since I intend to the keep the A2 long).

So I’m just wondering if anyone here has any advice I need to be aware of before going down the custom stainless steel route?

EG: I do need to keep the cat converter right? For MOT purposes? Or can that be removed?

And my main aim other than to replace the rotted bits of the exhaust is to gain better fuel economy and abit of power too! So please feel free to share any thoughts/ cautions/ advice please! 🙏🏼🙂

Thanks!

The catalytic converter is a must to get an MOT, without it the car is illegal to drive on the UK roads. Usually race cars remove them.
You need a serious exhaust system to make noticeable power from the 1.4 engine, but for a better exhaust sound it's very viable.
Try this recommended garage, should be fairly priced and good quality.
Either way, any changes/mod to the car should be reported to the insurer, otherwise they might cancel your policy in the future.

Hey Sylvester,

Thank you for that! Definitely needed that confirmation.

RE: Cat converter- definitely not looking to do anything crazy. Happy to keep it on.

Re: Infinity exhausts: yea! Those are the guys I drove down to check out yesterday.

As these guys are just a couple of miles away, I went to visit them when in need of flexi for my TDI at the time.

Th plan (in my head) was for a full SS exhaust, however once the guys had inspected the original they suggested it would be a complete waste as the original in was perfect condition and did I want to run the risk of breaking manifold studs unnecessarily?

In the end I went for just the flexi repair, they are not the cheapest for this repair but did do a good job.

They were happy for me to get under the ramps to look at the underside, they have a comfortable waiting area if you need to wait. That said I’m happy to pop over if anyone is hanging around for a chat or coffee

Hello! Thank you for the write up!

I believe I saw your A2 on their Instagram ( as I follow the #A2 hashtag), and that’s why I felt comfortable making the 3 hour drive down to them.

And yes, I’ll probably be changing my middle section and the flexi section of my exhaust.

Did you find any difference to fuel consumption/ power after the change?

That’s great! Thank you.
The only thing I would say is that if you need to stay with the car due to distance, take a packed lunch and a book/ipad or similar. They really are in the middle of nowhere and although they have a nice waiting area with a vending machine, there is a fair bit of waiting around

Yes thanks Teresa!

I did go visit to get a quote, so yes I know I’ll need to entertain myself for at least 2 hours.

How’d you find the FSI after it had exhaust work done? Any difference to power/ consumption? 🤔

I also went to Infinity recently to get my flexi replaced. They inspected the rest of the system as well (including taking off the undertray and manifold heat shield to get a proper look).
It certainly helped straight away, though my EGR pipe is also cracked so I won't have a fully-sorted system until I replace it (parts on the way).

It may actually have been my car that you saw on their Instagram (posted a couple of weeks ago). Hard to tell the colour as it was so filthy!

Hey everyone! Im headed to Bristol to get my exhaust done at Infinity Exhausts. Ill be there at 1pm and should be done after 3pm.

If anyone wants to meet for a meal/ coffee, that would be lovely! I do not see myself making the 3 hour drive home immediately after the exhaust work so would be lovely to grab a cuppa and chill before the 3 hour drive back to london.

Just let me know! :)

I live close by, but was some distance away yesterday so wouldn’t have been able to meet.

Hope it went well, what did you have done?

Sadly not my area but will be very interested to hear how it goes and what you had done. As you are in London happy to meet up at some point as I’m in West Sussex

Hi all, just an update-

It went well! I only did the flexi pipe and the centre section after the Cat and before the end box.

I thought a lot more would’ve been replaced but I think the worst of the corroded bits have been replaced with lovely stainless steel.

I think eventually I should do the cat too? It looks like an eye sore compared to the stainless steel bits. Just couldn’t afford to do all of it at one go.

Car felt abit zippier immediately after on the 110mile drive back to london. Was definitely quicker at picking up speed to the 70mile/hr mark and was very comfortable holding it there all the way back.

Might be placebo, but I’d like to think it was money well spent. 🙂
