fault p1031

Hi

Thanks for the reply Matt
Below is a log from Group 142 does anyone know what the four boxes are? 2. is the flaps which moves from100% to 0% at around 3500rpm and then back again.
I am not sure what 1,3,4 are.
Also can someone with no fault code 17439 - Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (N316)
P1031 - 35-00 - Setpoint Not Reached
Please log and post results for a working car. Log was taken from a 1.6FSi BAD engine hot at idle.

Address 01: Engine (036 906 013 F)

17:56:24 Group 142
1. 44.7 % Load
2. 100.0 % Load
3. 2.680 V Voltage
4. ADP. O.K.

Hi,
I have also had all these problems including a whole new lower manifold assy (£500).

After all that the plastic arm broke. Can the arm be ordered separately?

I wonder if any enterprising machinist could make them out of something other than plastic.

I have a similar issue now. Replace n316. Have VCDS is there values I can check.

I'm one of the unlucky not managing to solve this (even with the help of local garage, probably need to ask local Audi to change the whole engine next as the last resort...).

So far done:
- Removed and cleaned intake manifold (wasn't that carbonized actually).
- Changed "all relevant parts" (G336 potentiometer, solenoid).
- Checked correct movement of the flaps before re-installing the manifold

So what happens now:
- Idle: No error code. Channel 142 (VCDS) shows value of 100% (both for target and actual value).
- High RPM: Error code 17439. Channel 142 target value 0%, actual ca. 40%. However, the actuator works perfectly and in my opinion the flaps reach the target position. If I gently push the rod with a screwdriver, there's no visible movement but the value may drop slightly as the flaps and rods may bend slightly (say 5%).

Tried basic setting of channel 142, but it says "ERROR" instead of "ADP OK" - probably because 0% value hasn't been achieved.

The fun thing is I've found a couple of forum posts here and there with exactly the same problem (including the post above), some even with the same VCDS channel 142 outputs - however in none of the cases have I found if (and how) the problem was cured in the end.

So, finally, my question is: Has anyone got any idea what to do next? Is there some secret "basic setting" that needs to be performed with a new potentiometer? Could it be a problem with the wiring, ECU, or something else? Does anyone know what should be the resistance (in ohms) for the potentiometer in max and min positions?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

I have searched and searched! cannot find any threads that actually come to a conclusion, they all stop at a question.

I have similar readings; can anyone please give guidance as to the solution? for example given certain readings in VCDS where is the fault;

eg for me; at idle on 142 - 100% 100% 3.56v ERROR

Log appears to show the flaps opening at about 2k rpm? so solenoid and potentiometer must be working? but I cant get rid of the ERROR code. I don't understand why if it is operating correctly it shows ERROR.

Capture vcds1.PNG

any help at all will go along way, please :)

(btw mani cleaned and all parts replaced as for most people, but fault code keeps coming back)

Hi Nige,

1. I understood the flaps open at 2800rpm which does match the driving experience with a noticeable kick at 3000rpm (ish)

2. The intake manifold side of things on my FSI was stripped and rebuilt by Tony at A2Cars in February and hopefully in A1 condition and now drives well. Certainly no errors in May last time I checked. You are not too far away and I am quite happy if you visit and plug in your VCDS to get a log of what you should see. Maybe somebody nearer to you might offer the same to reduce travelling.

i too have p1031, the intake is only 2 years old so fairly sure is good. solenoid stopped producing vacuum so swapped and there is now vacuum. however vcds lite attempts to adapt flaps have failed. these are the readings i've normally been getting
Group 142
1. 99.5 % Load
2. 100.0 % Load
3. 3.200 V Voltage
4. ADP. RUN.

sometimes number 4 just shows ERROR. The ADP never turns to OK. Any ideas what I can try?

If i can find what works for me i'll post up, as there doesn't seem to be an answer listed anywhere..

Many thanks.

I am not sure about the limitations of VCDS Lite and the place to find out today, RossTech website, seems to be down today. I was wondering if the failure to adapt flaps was a limitation of VCDS Lite and something it simply can't do by design.

I have had this old friend as Tontonly called it since I got the car. I recently removed the lower intake manifold following this guide and gave it a good clean. The flaps moved freely but when I put the lower manifold back on the car I noticed they were blocked again. On the second attempt at fitting the lower manifold the flaps were moving freely. Once everything was back together I found a good check was to remove the value pipe and suck on it to see if the actuator arm moves. However I still get this error code. As far as I understand I need to use a registered version of VCDS-Lite with the measuring block 142 to run the adaption and check the value sent by the intake manifold flap potentiometer. Before I pay the $99 for this, is there anything else that I should check first and is there another scantool could do the job?

You do need a registered version of VCDS to run the Controller Output Test and Basic Settings. After working on the flaps and associated mechanism, you must "calibrate" so the ecu knows the flap (servo motor) position. It senses the full scale each way, and uses it as a reference. After work has been done, the flap may well be moving freely over it's full range, but if the feedback from the servo says it's not reaching the set point, an error will be generated, even if it actually is. That's corrected by the setup.
Mac.

It's a limitation of the free version of Lite, and us enabled by the software key you get when you register (approx £75, depending on the $/£ exchange rate).

Hi Mac,

If I have this right there is no servo motor to drive the flaps, it's vacuum driven. - Andy

Sorry, my terminology is duff. To me, a servo motor is a combined motor and motor shaft position sensor.
In the FSI, the flap "motor" is driven by vacum, the position is monitored by a electrical sensor, which feeds back their position to the ecu. Hope this is a bit more accurate. The two parts, motor shaft/flap and sensor must be in sync.

Agreed, that's clearer. - Andy

I can't help but wonder, how many FSIs are running with EML warnings, and VCDS codes, because the setup, using VCDS, hasn't been done following a repair?

I have just received the activation for VCDS-Lite and tried the adaption. It just shows the following and doesn't seem to do anything.

Group 142
1. 33.7 % Load
2. 0.0 % Load
3. 2.580 V Voltage
4. ADP. RUN

Have a read of this:

Then this, which Sarge posted this a while ago, it might help:

Turn the key on but do not start the car.
  • [Select]
  • [01 - Engine]
  • [Measuring Blocks - 08]
Enter Group 060

  • [Go!]
  • [Switch to basic settings]

Once you do this you will see the top right display say ADP RUN. The TB adaptation is being done as soon as you switch to basic settings. You will see the values change and hear the TB cycle for the first few seconds then it will stop. Leave it in Basic Settings for about 30 seconds.

  • [Switch to Meas. Blocks] button and you're all set.

Be sure not to touch the accelerator and make sure the engine is NOT running when you do this!

Good luck, may the FSI be with you!

The Throttle Body Alignment adaption seemed to work fine. When I tried Group 142 again it still paused on ADP. RUN
