First time A2 owner, project car

Hi, I picked up my "early" 1.4 Petrol A2 on Sunday after hankering for one for a while. My usual car is a Discovery 3 and since COVID im only doing very short trips which in a huge Diesel isn't very good for anyone including the Disco.

My A2 was an ebay, semi impulse/lucky buy for not a lot of money. Car has an alarm/central locking issue and had been unused for 10 months. I have my own car tansporter trailer and a fair bit of space so was a buy it, collect it and fiddle with it without incurring much cost or hassle beyond fuel for the trip. The handbrake was seized but a few taps on the drums with a hammer and drift freed them up (years of watching Chasing Classic cars and Wheeler Dealers paid off). Electric winch pulled it onto the trailer, absolute luxury.

List of jobs/issues.
  • Reprogram key to fix alarm issue I hope (VCDS or local garage as only have 1 key and usual methods dont work)
  • Revive or replace battery
  • Start the thing! its still on the trailer and im going to remove plugs and spin engine before running normally
  • Stereo volume has "that issue", will replace with original or buy a chip/kit
  • Remove dodgy cd changer wiring I found under drivers seat
  • No owners book (ordered one)
  • Side pillar interior alarm switch broken - HOW MUCH! (will try to to fix)
  • Door crack on driver side - will refurbish check hinge
  • Needs a darn good valet inside and out
Other than that its a 2 owner car with full history and you dont need me to tell you how cool and clever these little beasts are.

Thanks.

Welcome A nice little project to kick off your a2 ownership..? you might want to look at the mot history on this one although you may know already ...

Welcome along, I think we discussed this one on the forum when it was advertised, looked to have potential. I think the alarm issue is likely to be the CCCU (comfort unit).

Welcome,

If not done so already join the Marketplace on here for economic used parts.

The go to man for high quality check strap refurbishment is Paul(@depronman) and lots of other things as well.

I am guessing the head unit has cassette, upgrade to a Concert II with CD but will need a wiring tweek to work fully.

Not sure about alarm switch, peanuts on here used or new from CreweAudi on here, £40 wild guess.

Battery, good deal on Varta F19 posted today for new.

Andy

Hi welcome on board A2OC
Let me know if you need a door check strap. They are a common failure point but I offer a refurbished unit on an exchange basis for a bit less than Audi will charge you for anew unit and the refurbished unit as the failure point improved so it will last a lot longer than a new Audi one
I also do refurbished wiper arms which are very common to wear and cause the arm to scratch the lower section of the screen
Check out my thread. Depronman services. Google A2OC Depronman services
You may need to first pay the £2 marketplace upgrade fee (well worth it)

Cheers. Paul

Hi, update on this one.

I reconditioned the battery and its doing quote well (time will tell). Removed the plugs and checked the engine was free then turned over with the fuel pump fuse pulled to get some oil round it. Put the fuse back in and it started fine and ran ok but with a bit of a tick, this might clear with a full warmup or maybe a service.

Fault wise, the alarm blipper isnt working, but provided you open the door and stick they key in the ignition it just works fine. Ill leave it connected now and see if it drains over time. If you dont do that then, yes the alarm gos off but stops when the key is in the ignition.

As @greywolfhound said the MOT history is full of advisories and some "ignored issues", but it also has all receipts since 7000 miles and quite a lot done in the past including cambelt (however time not miles says its due again). MOT due soon, lockdown permitting, so ill get the baseline list then.

@A2Steve any info on the CCU issues welcome, like I said I cant actually reproduce the fault. I was told that the a new 12v battery needed to be coded to the car to be reliable? other than that it just looks like the key needs a sync. There was a CD head unit wire under the seat that wasnt insulated and was free to flap about so maybe that was causing a drain (id have thought it would have just shorted and blow a fuse though)

Gave it a wash today and headlights are very iffy inside and out, found a good thread on dismatling early car lenses to clean them and will do a exterior refurb. Im going to pull the check strap and make some rollers if required. Stereo and Missing Original Owners manual on order, not that they are that important.

Fixed the door crack today. Was just the rivets not the rollers, the rivets just fell off and have been replaced with bolts and nylocs. Door is now very nice, cost = £0

Well done for saving yet another A2 from the scrap yard!
Do you mind elaborating on the car transporter trailer? Asking for a friend  Are you in the car business or can one own and use privately?

Anyone with the requisite driving licence and a suitable tow vehicle can own and use a car transporter trailer. If you passed the driving test since 1997, you would need to take a 'trailer test' in order to legally tow a trailer of the size used by the OP.
Have a look at ebay to see the various types available.

Hi @herx by car transporter I mean a" Car Traile", I have this is I do a bit of Sprint racing in my Lotus Elise. as @Jeff Sutcliffe says its just on my car licence as I have "old mans rights" Picky of the setup in the first post.

Interesting, do you know when exactly in 1997? I passed my test in October of that year.

The relevant date was 1st January 1997. Those passing their driving test after that date are limited to a gross train weight below 3,500 kg. The licence category giving entitlement to drive up to a weight of 7,500 kg is B + E. There are lots of organisations offering training for anyone wanting to gain that category.
