Fitted S3 Gear Knob

The new gear knob which I bought from Germany arrived today, and I had a bit of spare time this evening, so I got on with it (took me about an hour to fit)

This new gear knob fits nicely and matches my aluminium look within the car

I have made a small how too guideline for other who want to do this

First step is getting the old one off as you need it as a template for the new one, (the new one is square and our one is round)

To get the gaiter off simply pull the leather upwards (NOT THE KNOB), this will pull the aluminium ring upwards and out of its simple locking mechanism (three clips) then pull the leather over the know and you will see a metal clip - this is the most challenging exercise of the switch

Take a pliers and take this ring off then pull the knob and gaiter upwards off.

Next step is trimming the new gaiter. This means we have to do some marking and measuring. But before we do this we have to take the plastic ring of, which is easy, just use a small screwdriver to lift the staples and then a plier to take them out

Here you see the old and the new one next to each other

This is how the bottom of the old gaiter looks like

I use masking tape to lay out the round shape (which was 15 cm from the bottom of the aluminium ring)

Then used a scissor and took off the excess

Step three is taking out the little notches where the clips sit, the aluminium ring only fits one way into the car so its important to get this right, so pay attention to this, you can use the old gaiter as template, but beware that this one has three stitches and our new one only TWO so keep your eyes open

If that is done its time to put everything back together

I use carpet spray glue to get the leather back on the plastic ring; I put a little mark on the plastic ring to indicate the bottom part of the ring as not to get confused

Then put the aluminium ring back on and your are ready,

Step four is to take of the little clip of the bottom off the gear knob, UNLESS you have a crimping tool then you can use the original clip, I took it off and used the hose clip (it is supplied with the new gear knob)

Finished

Step five
Now we are ready to put it all back in the car, the know only fits one way, push the knob all the way done, pull the leather back over the knob so you can tighten the hose clip and then pull the leather back and push the aluminium ring into its position (I hope you remembered that this ring only fits in one position!!!) and all is done
