Fitting a new MAP Electronic thermostat - 1.6Fsi

So, in my 4 days off I hope to be able to fit my new thermostat. I have read that you have to dis-engage one of the gear linkage cables to do this, and that they need resetting.
Is it possible to mark with a sharpie the setting on the plastic part and just refit to the same position, or is there something special I have to do?
Also, kinda not looking forward to refilling and bleeding the system. I am thinking of draining the coolant from the bottom hose partially into a bucket and using that to refill to ensure I use the correct amount of liquid.

Sealing the expansion tank, before starting the job, will minimise the coolant loss, by preventing air getting in.
