Fix seat belt

We have just bought an A2 but the drivers seat belt does not retract. Is there a simple way of fixing it or do I need to take it into a garage for them to do it?

This is a fairly well known trait of A2s and as far as I know the only fix is a new seatbelt. Sounds drastic but they're not that pricey in the great scheme of things.

Cheers,

Mike

So would I have to get an Audi garage to fit a new seat belt or could I find one online and fit it myself? (ie. is it easy to fit)

No. There is a way to fix it for free. I will tell you later this evening.

An entire new seatbelt unit is about the £120 mark.

If anyone goes down the self-fix route, please be careful as there is an explosive charge in the belt housing, used for the pre-tensioner.

Cheers,

Mike

There is no danger and no work on the pre-tensioner system.
Mostly, the belt is twisted behind the B-pillar!

It must look like image 1! The belt must be twisted 180 degrees in the visible area. If it is NOT twisted from the B-pillar to the mounting point beside the seat, then it is (wrongly) twisted behind/insind the B-pillar.

So you only need to remove the cover (by first removing the A-pillar cover, then the C-pillar cover, after that the B-pillar cover can be pulled out :( ) and then you can fix it by twisting it back so it is right and not twisted inside the pillar.
It should look like image 1.
Image 2 shows how it is wrong. There you see the belt is twisted inside the pillar. This may not be.

Image 2 shows also the round metal stripe where the belt goes behind. You can oil this by using Silikon oil. Or just spray it in! Use the silicon oil, then the belt will retract better The oil also can be used without removing any cover/trim.
But first make sure it is only twisted 180° on the out side.

If Erstens is right (and he usually is), then it'll not hurt to take a look and see if this can be sorted easily.

The trims are only held on with clips and in fact, if you clear the seat back of the B pillar trim, it can be pulled out and bent down to see if the twist is there. Just get your fingers in where the belt disappears and pull out from the 2 clips holding it.

Cheers,

Mike

Start in the front. It is easy. Start right between the A and B pillar right on the sill. Pull it straight up with force! There are three clips (you will probably loose some. Get some from your dealer (or they will remain in the holes)).
It is already OK when you have loosen the rear end. Then go to the back door. Do the same there with the C-pillar. Pull the front end of it straight up (right under the B pillar). Then you can right pull out (to the middle of the car) the B-pillar cover. But I think you need to remove the rubber-seal.
When you have the big downer part removed from the B-pillar, you won the fight:D

Edit: Right, you don't got to do all the work. The upper part from the plastik, lower part of the B-pillar cover can be pulled out a bit when the rubber seal is removed. Than you can see or feel the belt. If there is a problem or not. If there is, than you maybe need to remove it completely as I described.
