Flasher unit DIY repair (part 8Z0 941 509 B)

Hi Glen,

sometimes contaminated relay contacts can get a bit sticky and weld temporarily, but there is the "park" facility where the indicators stay on without flashing if the engine is off and the indicator stalk is up or down. A fault might make the module act as if this is happening when the car's really driving.

Cheers,

Dev

thanks dev, it is the intermittent thing that makes me think it just a dodgy relay
I shall try the replacement relay as it is relatively cheap and see what happens
cheers

Got the flasher unit from Crewe Audi, £22 with A2OC discount.
removed the symphony II unit and the ashtray, could not get the climate control out at all!! it just would not move!
instead could access the relay from the ashtray, as other members have, however it faced the other way with plug on left and was not clipped in behind two stips of plastic but instead was encased in a solid plastic holder which clipped onto the radio cage and was held onto frame behind the ashtray with two phillips screws.
I removed these screws and you could put your right arm into the double din slot and left arm into ashtray area and with a lot of fiddling swing the holder upwards and away from yourself to free the whole thing.
unclipped the plug and it was free.
Replaced the relay and all now working fine
thanks for all help

Hi Moorlander

Are you trying to fix your ash tray or the flasher unit?
If its the flasher unit and you have a concert or chorus headunit (single DIN size)you only need to remove the cubby hole above the ash tray. You will need to have the ash tray open but don't need to remove it.

Open the ash tray
Hands inside the cubby, pressing the sides
PULL!
It does come out eventually

Hope this helps

relay module buzz

I removed my dash to fix something else. Accentdentally, I did not remove the relay and I pull it apart, breaking the plastic clips on the module casing. Now I put it back and the relay is buzzing on the indicator, I can see the copper plate vibrating at a rather high frequence, hence the buzz. Hazard warning light doesn't work at all.

As the unit was fine before I yanked it out with the dash. Could it be something else I broke? Can I take a voltage reading across some pins to verify, before splashing out for a new module?

Just get a new relay Humps - they're not that expensive in the great scheme of things.

The weak point will be the solder joint on the connecting pins - no doubt one of these has broken. Possibly re-sweating the joints would solve the problem. However, as you can see from the innards, there is so much more to an A2 relay than there used to be on indicator relays of old.

Cheers,

Mike

My Indicators just packed up completly with no warning whatsoever , im prosuming this points to the relay ,
am i right in thinking if i remove the symphony that i will be able to see the relay behind it ....

Take out the Symphony and the flasher unit is down at the back, probably best if you take out the climate panel as well.

It is a black box, about the size of a Swan Vesta match box, with a connector at one end. Removal is easier if you take the plug off first, then squeeze the 2 retaining clips in and maneouvre it out of there.

Cheers,

Mike

PS One quick test to see if it is definitely the relay - do the hazards work? If yes, then change the relay.

Hi,

My indicators packed up today with no warning. I used the part number in this thread to search on VAG parts and it said 'for all A2s without factory fit tow bar'. Mine has the tow bar, has anyone got the part number I need?

I've also been getting an odd clicking when switching on the ignition. I thought it was coming from one of the door locks, but could it be something to do with the flasher unit packing up as well?

The part you need is 8Z0 941 509 C.

Don't worry, the price is the same as the normal one.

Change the relay and see if the clicking goes and then report back.

Cheers,

Mike

Great, thanks for the prompt response.

It's such a pain in the behind to happen now as I'm going on holiday in 3 days for 3 weeks and I have literally every second of my spare time planned with things to prepare for the holiday, and now I have to find time to go to the Audi dealer and sort this out as well.

Is it possible to make your own radio removal keys from slicing up an old credit card or something? Or do I have to buy proper ones?

You can make your own keys, but don't use an old credit card as the chances are that you'll just jam up the slots when they break!

You don't actually need to remove the radio to change the relay though - just the stowage tray and climate panel.

Cheers

Mike

I've got the double DIN symphony II, so no stowage tray to remove. So I presumably need to remove the radio instead.

Cheers

Aaahh!

You can go in via the climate panel but that is a pain to remove.

You're best off getting a set of 4 keys to be honest

Cheers

Mike

I've just ordered what is apparently the last one in the country! The Audi dealer said they would pop the stereo out for me so I can go home and do the rest without buying the keys that I will never need to use again.

So fingers crossed, only one more day of no indicators!

Cheers.

Just a note, if you 'pop' out the stereo and the wires become disconnected, then you'll need your security pass for the stereo, make sure you have this otherwise 3 weeks without sound is gonna be very uncomfortable :)
