Flasher unit DIY repair (part 8Z0 941 509 B)

Just did this repair last night. Part was £37.30 (inc. VAT) from Aberdeen Audi with a little bit of discount taken off. Straight forward, although I found it easier to remove ash tray, then the black fascia trim surround, then remove storage box. All fitted and indicators work. Only thing I noticed - was that I sometimes hear extra clicks, when the indicators are cancelled after turn. Part is guaranteed, so should be fine. Anyone have a similar experience?

FWIW

I asked a friend, as my indicators packed-up, then came back, and have been working fine for months.
Then stopped again.

He asked me wiggle the indicator stalk, next time it packed up. I did a month ago and they instantly started working.
My feeling is it's not the relay but the stalk.

Perhaps this might be an issue for yourself??

Just had the same problem with wife's car, folowed the instruction found here and managed to get the unit out, opened and adjusted the distance between the contacts and now it works perfect. Thanks a2oc!

Following up on this thread... my relay has just packed up, wasn't the stalk after all.

I can confirm to others, it's a fiddly job, but straight forward.

I removed, ash tray, cubby hole, and climate control fascia. The relay is behind the cubby hole on it's side, facing the passengers' side.

Can also confirm I have joined the 'lost skin club' on the knuckles!

As my repair was urgent, I have just cleaned the contact with a scalpel blade and screwdriver. Yes it's short term fix, but will see me through a couple of days until I can get a new unit ordered.

Thanks to all who have written/taken pics... very helpful.

Cheers guys

I thought the stalk was at fault on mine at first too. It was the relay in the end. Mine started getting worse over a period of time, then eventually would only flash once then stop, so I had to drive around for a few days putting the stalk on/off a few times to indicate. Before it got so bad, I had noticed when indicating (before I knew of any issue) that the clicks sounded a little uneven, but thought nothing of it until I read up on the issue a bit.

This is why I like this forum, it has a huge knowledge base dedicated to the A2 with really good guides and info.

Firstly, thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.
I have a couple of observations that may be useful regarding the indicator relay and possible repair.
I have a 1.4 TDi 2004 which has lost the indicators completely whilst the hazards remain working. Assuming the fault is the relay, I went ahead to remove the same. I really struggled with removing the storage box which defied brute force but finally gave way to a very thin putty knife inserted in the side trim to a point where it released the clip on that side and similarly whilst keeping the released side from popping back in, the other side was disengaged. No damage to trim or clips. After next taking out the ash tray I managed with much difficulty to remove the "faulty" relay following the information in the threads. Having dismantled the relay module, I find it somewhat different to the one that Dev repaired. It has two Omron sealed relays soldered direct to the PCB. One is a double relay Omron G8NW-2 the other is Omron G8N-1. Both rated at 30amps!
These are available although some suppliers say the GBN-1 is discontinued. I did find several sources though for both. I think the GBN-1 is responsible for the indicators but I have decided to order and replace both. Total cost about £10.00 for the two (including delivery). I can't find a replacement original Audi relay module for less than £50.00. (Stoke) I'm hoping that it is the relay at fault and I will report back when I have the new relays fitted. Both of these relays are direct replacements and as such, will drop straight onto the PCB once the old ones are desoldered. Fingers crossed.

Source for the relays would be great in case anyone else wishes to follow your lead on repairing the flasher relay

Cheers

The other optiin would be to buy a replacement flasher unit from me delivered for less than a tenner :)

Before I reached your thread, Steve, I had thought just that! Why not use a flasher unit from a breakers? Yes, and you're "top-of-the-pile" there, that's for sure! You've helped me SO many times!

Update. My indicators are now working again after the repair.
Both relays can be found with a google search though I found that the G8N-1 has been discontinued. I found one on ebay though. This is the one for the direction indicators. Electronics suppliers like Digikey or Mouser still have them but the postage is rather excessive unless you have an order of greater value, then postage is free. Farnell and RS components suggest alternatives but I'm not sure if the pin outs are the same without checking.
Out of interest, I cut away the casing of the old relay. (G8N-1). Hardly any contact material left and what left was was very burnt and pitted. Car has done 86,000 miles. so I would be wary of fitting a second hand module from a vehicle of that mileage or greater.

Thread resurrection,,,
Our A2 is fitted with ''concert'' radio, has anyone any photos of the relay removal, the bloke that looks after our A2 seems to think it's almost a ''dash out'' repair.

It's not too bad on the cars with single-DIN audio (Concert, Chorus). Open the ashtray then put a hand into the storage cubby above and make a fist. Yank hard to pull out the cubby, it's held by four spring-clips. The relay is clipped into a bracket behind it. To give yourself enough room to get at it you'll probably also want to remove climate panel (similar spring clips) and maybe the audio headunit (with the appropriate release keys). I don't remember having to remove the ashtray but if you want to, it's only two screws and a small connector behind for the internal LED light.

Hi All I too now have these symptoms, I will follow all advice here to remove offending relay. The relay,
8Z0 941 509 B does appear to have rocketed in price. Out of interest does anyone know if any other VAG relay would be compatible?

As far as i know the A2 is the only one to have the hazards and indicators in a stand alone relay, usually part of the hazard switch, closest i know is a A4 one but its part of the hazard switch so not sure if its possible to adapt!
TPS wanted £60 with vat
Ebay has one at £42 but in latvia i think
Second hand on ebay £25
Breakers on here £18 with postage (when they have them)

I may be mistaken but I think my local garage listed on the invoice a VW Beetle relay when replacing the indicator/hazards relay. It might be worth a bit of investigation.
