Forum update plans

Thanks Ben for all the hard work you do to maintain this site and make everything run so smoothly.

I note that the new version supports a Dark Theme style. If you decided to implement this then please also implement the option for users to change it back to the Light Theme. My eyes are sensitive to bright lights so I have the screen brightness down and the contrast up. I find that dark themes are then really hard to read the text.

PS Do you think the developers will ever improve the search engine so we don't have to search via a web search engine?

Thanks Alan

We will keep our brand as similar as possible to the current setup.

Regarding search, there is the option to use a proper search engine with the product, but there are cost implications for this. I’ll review with the team if this is something the club can afford.

Thanks

Ben

Great work Ben.
Something I've noticed on this forum site but no other is the fact that related posts/threads appear below the post you are reading. Very useful, saves going back to search again.

Hi @ben - thanks for everything you do for us.

Something I’ve noticed which I’m sure has changed. When logged in, now clicking on the club logo sends me to the forum home, but also logs me out at the same time.

Pretty sure this worked without the logout before - if you get a chance to look / test.

Cheers,

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

What browser are you using? I checked it here, and clicking on the logo does not log me out.

Ben

The forum has now been upgraded to the latest version of XenForo. See here for details of changes:

We'll be rolling out some of the new features in the coming days.

Some of our existing add-ons are not currently available. They'll be upgraded when compatible versions are made available.

If you spot any issues, please post them here.

Many thanks,

Ben

For those with modern phones, the Passkeys support should save some typing when logging in:

I’ve updated the software again to a new patch release, which fixes a number of minor issues. See here for details:

Let me know if you have any problems.

Ben

As part of the upgrade, I've migrated our image hosting to a new provider. Please let me know if you see any issues within images or attachments.

Thanks
Images appear to be slower to load - a function of linking to separate server maybe?

I’ll do some checks. The new image host (Cloudflare) typically has a good reputation for this.

Thanks

Ben

I'm seeing initial transfer times of around 300-400ms - which isn't great. I'll see if I can enable their caching. If no better, we can switch back to the previous provider (it's a bit more expensive).

Can you share some debug stats with meta s follows:
  • Open your browser Network debug tools:
    • On Safari it's under Develop > Show Web Inspector > Network
    • On Edge it's Tools > Developer > Developer Tools... > Network
    • On Chrome it's View > Developer > Developer Tools > Network
  • Then load one of the Media pages (something with lots of images)
  • You should see the response times in the Network section
  • Share the screen grab if you can

For example, in Safari I see:

It's the time figures I'm interested in for any of the images coming from images.a2oc.net

Thanks

Ben
