Front spring bearings

Hi . I had the spring bearings replaced 2 years ago . Now I hear them again, lucky there is 3 year waranty for original parts in Norway. I´ll get new sometime in 2008. Strange sound though.....

Good its getting sorted!!

Some VW's have a few front suspension bearing issues, but it didn't seem a problem on the A2, are your roads very bumpy?

Hi Jossi

What do they sound like? I drove our A2 the other day and its making a kind of sqeeking noise when I went over large bumps (speed humps etc) only thing is I can't replicate it when the car is stationary by rocking the car.

Cheers

You'll normally get a boing noise when turning lock to lock or moving at slow speeds and large turning angles. This is caused by the bearing sticking and holding the spring in place, then suddenly releasing as you turn the wheel.

I was just about to ask the same question as I've started getting the 'boing' noise that mike describes.

Mike - is there any action that can be taken to improve this, or is it just a feature to get used to!

The only real way to fix it is to change the bearings, which are not expensive in themselves (about a tenner a side), but the labour is the big cost, as the entire suspension strut needs removing to get to the bearings.

Also, strictly speaking, you should get an alignment check after re-assembly, which all adds to the cost. They appeared pretty much sealed to me, but if there is a way to pack more grease in the new bearings before fitting, this would extend their life,

thanks for the swlft reply mike! lf I were to leave the bearings as they are (the noise only happens once every two weeks ish) would it cause more problems in the long run?

The worst that could happen is that you break a spring - it won't damage the damper at all, nor the wheel/tyre.

Mike

Hi. It´s the "Boing" and I shall squeeze my dealer to get the part and work for free!
We have very bad roads here .Our government have not yet noticed the are cars!!
Better roads in Sweden.

my spings snapped and i had them replaced and was told the mounting at the top was damaged so 2w later i hered a nocking noise on the straight and i had the mounting replaced on the hard side (drivers). All was well then i had 17 inch alloys fitted and one week later more knocking from the side that was fixed- yes ride is more bumpy with low profile tyres but the cars look is transformed.

could it be something has worked loose ? should i take to another grarage or ask the existing garage to fix it but there bound to say something else now gone. My main concern is this will be the 3rd time in 6weeks the strut is removed will the ball joints wear or cause damage elseware

The cars only done 62k (2001 jan -missed road tax date by 1month)and i have had no trouble with it what so ever other than an engine sensor that was effecting the throttle/idling

any advice

Hi Azz,

I'm not sure what type of A2 you are driving. If you can find the time, please fill in your Public Profile. European cars in general are not having a good time with their suspension components and the A2 is no different. Knocking sounds can come from various sources including anti roll bar mounts, drop links and shock absorber / bearings. The drop links are relatively cheap to do. I presume that you have not had the car from new, but at seven years old it is entering middle age, when wear and tear starts to show. I also see that your other recent post is about Koni shocks. The Konis transformed my car. I am not one for lowering so I still have the standard springs.

Hi azz
The bottom of the strut is fixed to the hub assy by a split clamp arrangement and pinch bolt. It's possible this pinch bolt has worked loose, particularly if the self lock nuts have not been replaced. Also, the 3 bolts which locate the strut top mount are very difficult to tighten due lo limited access so these may not have been fully tightened.
Note the abs sensor wires may rub the wider wheels and wear through so keep an eye on them.

Cheers Spike
