Front Suspension Upgrade.

Hello All,
I'm new to the thread so here goes:- My daughter bought the first A2, My son quickly followed, I was a year behind before buying my A2 primarily for commuting, 120 mile round trip. All three cars are diesels and all have suffered from the same problem i'e the front suspension bottoms out when driven over your average country road bump. We have had the springs and dampers changed for standard items but these still do not seem to handle what to me is a fairly average road.
Could some one pont me in the right direction to either a stronger spring or stiffer damper. Any advice would be appreciated. All three cars cover high mileages every day and this issue spoils, what to me, is a vastly under rated car.
Thanks and Regards, tmhsg.

suspension travel

Hi tmhsg,

Fitting Koni FSDs will help a lot, but not totally fix the problem of the front suspension running out of travel and crashing into the bump stops.

Search for posts by Schnelletrecker and you will find some excellent guidance.

Please let us know what size wheels and tyres your A2s are fitted with?

John.

FSD's and 15" wheels :):)

Hi Chubbybrown,

I see that your car is a 2004 model year.

I have a question regarding springs. Were the front springs fitted to early A2s different to those fitted to later ones? I have driven a 2004 petrol and the difference is quite noticeable. Is the difference entirely due to less weight over the front axle? The car may have been fitted with 15" wheels which of supports your suggestion that 15" wheels help - due to less unsprung mass?

Front Suspension Upgrade

Thanks to all for the help and advice,

I am going for a set of the Koni dampers and will keep you all up to speed on progress and , hopefully, improvements,

There was a mild suspension setup change in May 2002 IIRC.

what would that be, Bret? I do remember a magazine tested an FSI that they say has the revised suspension, but IIRC, they weren't too impressed with the ride comfort either.

I just read the web, I really don't know what they did. I *think* the spring rates were changed slightly. ETKA will probably giive better answers.
