Front Wheel Bearing

Hi Guys,

Who is the go to guy on this forum for front wheel bearing replacement? I've done one rear so far and will follow up with the other rear today. If this doesn't cure the noise issue with the rears at least it's one less thing to worry about and i got the FAG bearings quite cheap so not too bad.

I was going to attempt this myself after seeing a thread on here with youtube video however, as much as i could strip this down, i want to avoid any errors of reassembly and possible damage if i'm to do it wrong!

I don't mind the travel if it can be done within the day so please let me know what the going price is for front wheel bearing replacement?

Cheers

Others may disagree, but I just change out the whole hub for a used one at about £30, plenty available, Skoda, vw, etc (provided you can get the driveshaft out yourself) . Bearing fitting seems hit and miss.

If your wanting to do yourself without buying the tool i think calling a few local VAG specialists and asking if they can swap the bearings if you bring the parts only to them, but in reality with the tool anywhere outside of London it may not be much more for the garage to do the whole job!

Thanks guys...i might have been premature on the front bearings being knackered. Last night i only managed to change the rear passenger side and the noise was still there. However, i changed the rear drivers side today and the problem is gone...result!

I still need to change the rear brake cylinders as one of the pistons on each side has seized....i tried spraying wd40 but it's still stuck. Once i've ordered these i will replace them. Is it safe to buff down the lip on the brake disc hub with a grinder or just leave as is?

I've ordered the timing belt & water pump (skf) and will get this done in the coming weeks. This will leave only two problems to get fixed on my car that being the OSS, which does not open but closes fine and a seal or pipe near the turbo that's leaking but this is something i'm not going to tackle.

Cheers

Sweet result, grinding the lip for me is fine just be careful not to damage the friction surface
Did you order the belt kit to chassis number?

Please tell me i've ordered the right one....

theres a different tensioner set up for earlier cars upto 2002 and also a different water pump (045 121 011 B) for the earlier cars upto a certain chassis number which can also have both tensioner systems i believe but if yours cars a later chassis number that kit is correct
