Front Wishbone aluminium console rear bush

I have had to destroy the rear bush to get the wishbone hex pin out as it wouldn't budge at all, so I have the outer sleeve with some rubber inside the console.

Is the bush a fit from either side or does it go in and out one way only. It looks like there is a small lip to stop the bush being pulled too far through?

Picture from another members thread to highlight what I think is a lip for one way bush fit.

I am correct. Does anyone have a pic or something from the manual they can share with me pretty please.

I don't remember there being a lip in there when replacing this bushing (also a forced repair because the centre of the bushing came out with the wishbone). I pressed the bearing out using the specific tool for the job as per the workshop manual with the bearing coming out towards the back of the car (if the console were installed).

The manual says to measure the position of the bush within the housing and then reinstall the new one to the same point, which makes me think that there is not a lip for it to bottom out to on either side of the housing and it must be a smooth bore.

Hi there, done mine recently, unfortunately lost the pics due to corrupt SD card. From that A2 pic, what looks like a lip is the outer case/ sleeve and part of the bearing, this has to come out so you may be in luck (I say 'may' coz these are a nightmare, destroyed a cheap bearing puller kit in the process)
The distance from that lip/sleeve to the outer housing edge is what you need to measure, approx 2mm from memory. Once it's out, there might be a witness mark to help you out but It'll push in from either side.

Fantastic. Thank you. You guys with all this manual stuff are amazing

Also just one thing of note the VW/Skoda part does not take the same bushing diameter to the Audi one, the console has a smaller inner diameter on the console brackets from the A2 and as such the bushing is also smaller (also found this out the hard way, frustratingly the part number on the aluminium casting remains the same).

Thank you. That is indeed helpful and I have also been researching the A2 manuals on line and saving images etc, in addition to those posted by the forum members :)

Thanks and noted. The bush I have is a Lemforder one and OEM to correct part number :)

Can red rubber grease be used instead of VAG G 294 421 A1 assembly lubricant for the bushes? Other Audi sites and old 'tinternet' suggests it can?
I only ask as I have Fuchs red rubber grease in my workshop.

From the manual....

Note!
t Use assembly lubricating oil -G 294 421 A1- (diluted 1:20) when pressing in.
t This lubricating oil is acid-free and penetrates into the rubber after a short time (by diffusion).
t It leaves a slightly tacky film, which ensures firm seating of the bush.
t Most conventional greases or oils contain acid and cause a film of lubricant to form.
t This may affect the rubber, or cause the entire bush to twist in the suspension bracket instead of flexing when the suspension compresses and rebounds.

I suspect the "A1" part number has been superseded by the "A2" part number but unable to confirm this. Note this is used diluted down assuming with water as it does not specify.

yes i saw that but wasn't sure if the use of red grease does the same thing?

I have yet to change mine ( on my To Do list) but did change them on a 2001 Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI estate. I changed them for a Seat Ibiza cupra which are a solid bush.
All I can say is make sure your bores your fitting the new bushes into are clean and free from burrs / high spots and use lots of lube / grease. The last 10 mm on one side was a nightmare to get back home.
At least he time I was doing them at work (in my own time) at the weekend, at one point I thought I would be sleeping in the car overnight.
Best of luck, hope it goes to plan. 🤞👍

Yep, that is what i used with no problems, very sparingly, but from research, dry moly lubricant is what would have been best as in this case its metal outer casing to metal housing.

No it is very different, red rubber grease is a grease that lubricates and continues to lubricate. G294 421 A is an assembly lubricant that partially dries and has adhesive properties.
It is expensive and has a short shelf life.

Thank you. Always worth asking for exactly that reasoning.
