FSi buying help

The 'one size fits all' handbook eventually makes it clear buried away in an appendix of facts and figures.

Just looked in the handbook. It says 98 for 1.6 and 95 for 1.4. I've been using 95 since new (53 plate) in my 1.6Fsi and £120k+ miles. Perhaps this is why my engine light is on!! Wondered if it was due to inactivity due to lockdown and why I was on here having a look.

For the FSI, the data sheet shows:
Super Plus bleifrei, mindestens 98 ROZ
Doesn't need Google Translate does it?
The manual says the same, but in English in mine.
See @Mari recent post on the FSI Fuel thread.

Oh dear, a case of shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted. Pound to a penny the flaps are compromised with carbon and will need cleaning/fixing/injector refurb at some cost ( see my post above). Fill it up with 99 RON (Shell V-Power, Tesco Momentum) at the same time add injector cleaner (Sainsbury's) and take it for a long aggressive drive.

Edit. Welcome by the way, your first post in 12 years!

Thank you. I will give the latter a try and report back. It must have been behaving itself for the last 12 years!

Another issue with the FSI is it MUST ONLY be run on the super unleaded premium grades of fuel. The longer the car has run on other fuel the far greater the chances of inheriting running issues. Many people buy a "cheap runabout" and do not want to buy the more expensive fuel, sometimes this could also be through lack of knowledge. Does the label inside a FSI filler flap clearly state not to use standard fuel? It can get annoying and expensive repairing someone else's "thrift" Good luck with your FSI and as others stated a sorted one is a pure delight.
I don't know what to suggest. Can we put a big warning screen on the site to warn or remind all 1.6 FSI owners about this critical need for correct fuel. Bet that even several owners on here are still not aware some of their engine problems are down to their fuel incorrect type, or certainly aggravated by the wrong fuel.

This 98 / 95 fuel type issue is why I asked if the dealer was meant to remove the 95 part of the sticker for the 1.6 FSI and the 98 part for a 1.4 FI prior to delivery. Surprised nobody has taken them to court over it in the past.

The "crap" that builds up in the FSI inlet manifold, and eventually leads to flap seizure, actuator rod failure etc, comes from the EGR and PCV system.
The only way to minimise this (I don't think it can be prevented altogether), is to use the best quality fuel, to achieve the cleanest burn, and the best quality fully synthetic oil, so that little or no burnt oil and the volatile compounds, which poor quality, non-synthetic oils release when they get hot, are fed back into the inlet manifold.
For me, that means detergent rich, non supermarket fuel, minimum 98 octane (99 Shell V-Power preferably), and Quantum Fully Synthetic engine oil.
There is no way to remove the "crap" other than strip and clean the manifold, followed by the above fuel and lube regime.
As always, just my opinion.
A good FSI is, indeed, a joy to drive.
Mac.
Edit: The inlet manifold is cool, compared to the rest of the engine, as it has ambient air (no fuel) flowing through it, so hot gases will condense in the manifold, and dry. Hence the "crap"

How did it get so dirty, was it left open for a prolonged period?
No always shut. When I wash the car it's shut of course and simply never think to open and wash occasionally. Will do now, next wash it can have its inaugural wash after 15 years! There is no real seal on the flap, not a bad fit but not waterproof but over 15 years grime has slowly got in there.

I can’t recall having ever cleaned the inner part of the flap (on any car come to think of it) so maybe I’ve had ones that seal better. Is there an adjustment to the flap to prevent it getting so dirty?

You can remove it altogether. Job's a good'un. And when the switch on the driver's side pillar breaks (because it will) you won't have to worry about opening it from behind the rear light.

Trouble with that is the fuel can then be syphoned out as the cap itself does not lock only the flap. Not to mention looks strange without the flap.

The inner part of my flap is clean so no issues for me on that one. Agree with @audifan, it would look silly and it locks, why would you change that.

I did the above but nothing changed the EML but I only got through half a tank of petrol. I posted on here for sale but no replies - presumably because of the EML but didn't mention that the lower manifold was replaced at 98k! So, I took it for full service including the petrol filter, the guy added more super duper cleaner and took it for a drive. And it looks like it may well be sorted. Clearly was the injectors. Since new, I've always put 95 petrol in but as it's coming of age and turning 18 shortly I will now only put the 98 in. I'm now keeping for a while as mechanic said it's in really good condition (which it is especially when I look at the body work of some listed for sale on here) and that it drives lovely!

I cannot find your advert - in fact when I click on your profile I see only 3 posts in total from you, all in this thread?

Sensitive souls, are FSIs. They respond to love and attention (not, necessarily in that order). Kind words from your Mechanic, and yourself (doesn't have to be within earshot, FSIs are all knowing) plus Super Unleaded has done the trick. It'll be fine, as long as it knows you care. But, beware, it can read your mind, a moment's negative thought will undo all the good.
Mac.
