FSI Tappety Start Up.

Hi,
Just to share my experience:
My FSI has been a bit tappety, on start up, since I took on "mindership" (you never own an FSI ,,,).
At that time, it had just been serviced, but had not had the oil and filter changed (it was on the Audi regime, and oil was not due till next time).
It has just had a full service, including oil, filters, cam belt water pump etc. All parts, and the oil, were genuine Audi, and carried out by my local "indie" (SJB Autotech).
It is very obvious that the tappety rattle, that pre service, lasted about 3 seconds, now lasts about 1 second, if that, and is a "softer" rattle too.
Mac.

All fsi do this - hot weather it’s worse.

Interestingly my lupo gti engine also does this.

Which shares a huge number of engine parts with the FSI, the head is extremely similar, my mechanic (Vw specialist) believes this is due to a fault with the vvt unit, this has been backed up by the factor the timing isn’t changing with the Rev range. I’m getting the mechanical and electrical parts refurbed. Will see if this help with the rattle on start and we believe this is related as oil pressure related.

The phasor is oil-controlled isn't it?

Yes it is, simply the one I have seems to damaged, in some way the part number is common to the lupo gti the a2 FSI and the golf v6 4motion.

There is a company in Poland the refurbs the electrical part and this mechanical part.

The issue this is causing is almost like an oil blockage and the oil pressure is higher than it should be. Car drives fine, just the vvt doesn't work and rattle on start up.

Here is their website

You got me thinking now regarding our A2. I remember that the controlling part is just a solenoid with a couple of control positions to redirect oil. If there are more than two positions, then it must be pulse-width modulated. ELSA usually mentions the pulse frequency and you should be able to test it on the bench. As for the mechanical part, if it isn't seized then refurbishing cannot be more than a good disassembly, clean and fresh o-rings !?

Maybe but VW are very clear about not touching the bolts on these as it will break it, I don't know more details. I know the seals go on them or something along these lines, anyway i'll report back if it makes a difference on mine.

Hello,

and what are the proper technical names of these "electrical part and this mechanical part"? I just want to find out from Audi how how much they are new.

Thanks,

Andre

I will find you the part numbers but the mechanical part is £650, the electric actuator is £150-£200 I believe if not more

Interestingly, I have had my mechanical VVT actuator refurbed by a polish company and it has completely removed the starting noise on my lupo engine, which uses the same part number for this part as the 1.6fsi
